Description

Bilweb Auctions has been entrusted with selling the cars from the Saab Memorial Hall collection. Sweden's charming little Saab museum was started by Norwegian Tron Bach, who moved to Sweden in 2011. After a busy life as a hotel owner, Tron relocated to a small farm in Sweden. He found his home in the village of Gullsjö, Vännäs. When he discovered a worn and dented Saab 92 behind a shed, the idea began to take shape. He decided to start a Saab museum to honor the Swedish automotive heritage of Saab, a car admired worldwide. Over the years, the museum has welcomed over 1,000 visitors to the small northern Swedish village. Tron feels that with age comes the right to close his museum on a high note.

The museum will close just in time for the auction. We recommend visiting until then. For more information, visit Saab Memorial Hall.

In this auction, there are several cars that we couldn't remove from the premises. To do so, one of the walls must be demolished. This will be done at the museum's closure, so buyers can collect their cars. Please note that these vehicles have been off the road for an extended period. This means that additional work may be required to get them in order compared to similar models that have been continuously driven.

About the car:

These police vehicles were custom-built on direct orders from the then National Police Board (Rikspolisstyrelsen). They were powerful and had excellent driving characteristics. They were particularly appreciated by traffic police when extra speed was needed to complete their tasks. Expect high wear due to their intended use.

The car was inspected and approved when it was added to the collection in 2018. It was driven regularly before the police livery was applied and the car was placed in the museum. It is said to have functioned normally at that time. It has been off the road since then and requires a review and inspection before it can be examined by the Swedish Transport Agency.

The police text and the small national coat of arms must be covered when driving on public roads; permission can be requested from the police authority to use the text.

The siren and blue light were removed when the police decommissioned the Saab. According to the Swedish Transport Agency, the car has had 14 previous owners, including the police, car dealers, and the museum. The car comes with an instruction manual, police vehicle supplement, and service book.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Equipped with a 2.3L turbo engine producing 220 hp and an automatic transmission. The car was started and driven only a short distance for the photography session. The engine sounded good and was very easy to start. It had been in the exhibition since 2018 when we installed a battery and turned the key (see the video). There is surface rust on the brake discs. We have not tested all the functions of the car. It is missing a start battery.

  • Interior condition:

The car shows signs of use but the interior is in unusually good condition considering it served as a police vehicle. It features extra door pockets that were only installed on emergency vehicles. The luggage compartment is in good condition. The electrical system for the previous additional equipment in the back seat seems to be intact. See the pictures.

  • Exterior condition:

Shows signs of previous service use. There is a crack in the windshield, scratches, some dents, and paint chipping. There is also rust around the rear wheel arches and more. See the pictures. The underside was difficult to inspect but shows visible surface rust. The tow bar is missing.

  • General condition:

Saab-built police car that served, was decommissioned, and had new livery applied when added to the collection. Wear and tear appears normal considering its intensive use and age.

Owner's comment

Every car museum must naturally have a police car in its collection. I saw an ad and decided to go for it. The advertising company that was supposed to help me recreate the police livery ran into problems. All the old livery templates had been discarded. I left my small model car with them, which they 3D-photographed, allowing them to recreate the livery. I also asked them to write the museum's name as the station on the rear door.

Facts about the model

Swedish police began using Saab vehicles as early as the 1970s, starting with the Saab 99. The police version of the 99 featured the EMS engine and included unique details such as extra compartments for police equipment, custom upholstery, and stiffer suspension. The big breakthrough for Saab as a police car came with the turbo version of the Saab 99, which required officers to undergo special driving training. The collaboration between the National Police Board and Saab continued over the years with models including the Saab 900, Saab 9000, and Saab 9-5. Even the American police in Aspen, Colorado, drove Saabs.
