"Early Saab 99 models are becoming rare. This example was in traffic when it was driven into the museum under its own power in 2016. Suitable for museums or collectors. If you plan to drive it on the road, service and a thorough inspection are required before the vehicle can pass its MOT inspection. Once it passes the next approved inspection, the car will be exempt from future inspections under Swedish vintage vehicle regulations."

Description

Bilweb Auctions has been entrusted with selling the cars from the collection at Saab Memorial Hall, Sweden's most charming little Saab museum. The museum was founded by Norwegian Tron Bach, who moved to Sweden in 2011. After a busy career as a hotel owner, Tron relocated to a small farm in Sweden, finding his home in the village of Gullsjö, Vännäs. When he discovered a worn and dented Saab 92 behind a shed, the idea began to take shape. He decided to start a Saab museum to honor the Swedish cultural heritage of Saab, a car admired worldwide. Over the years the museum has been open, more than 1,000 visitors have visited this small Northern Swedish Saab museum. Tron feels that, with age, it is time to close his museum on a high note.

The museum will close around the time of the auction. Until then, we recommend a visit. For more information, see https://www.saabmemorialhall.info/.

At this auction, there are several cars we have not been able to remove from the premises. To do so, one of the walls must be demolished. This will be done at the closure so that buyers can collect their cars. Please note that these vehicles have been stored for an extended period, which means they may require more work to get them in order compared to models that have been driven continuously.

About the car:

This "veterinary blue" Saab 99 was acquired by the museum in 2016.

The car was purchased new in 1969 by Axel Stark in Siljansnäs. Mr. Stark had the special title of trackman, which meant he worked for the Swedish State Railways as a track guard. The car was assigned the registration number W 99686 by the then Kopparbergs County Board. It is reported that the car has had 7 previous owners. The car was incorporated into the museum collection in 2016. At that time, it had passed an inspection by the Swedish vehicle inspection agency. It was bought in Uppsala and driven under its own power to Vännäs, a distance of 560 km. The car comes with an owner's manual, service booklet, older inspection reports from Swedish vehicle inspections, and a spare wheel.

We found a service note from 1975, indicating that the car had covered 6,967 Swedish miles. The current mileage is 5,297 miles, leading us to conclude that the odometer has "rolled over," so the correct mileage should be 15,297 miles.

This Saab 99 is one of the vehicles we were unable to roll out from the museum. It has not been started and will require service and inspection before it is ready for driving.

Read the story of why the car is called "The Veterinarian" under the owner's comments. Also, see the video where Tron Bach talks about the car.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Equipped with a 1.7-liter, four-cylinder Triumph engine, with a rated output of 80 hp. The gearbox has four speeds and is fitted with a freewheel. BWA conducted a short start attempt during photography, after which we determined that a start service is needed before another attempt. According to reports, the car functioned without technical issues when it was driven into the museum in 2016. No technical functions have been tested by BWA. Missing a start battery.

  • Interior condition:

The front seats were renovated before the car was placed in the museum, so they are in like-new condition. The rest of the interior is in good condition with minor wear. The trunk is tidy, with the original floor mat and spare wheel cover showing some wear. See the pictures.

  • Exterior condition:

Mostly original paint with some touch-ups. The hood was repainted in 2016. There are typical stone chips on the front. There are surface rust spots along the sides, rust on the lower edge of the driver's door, and blisters on the rear wheel arch. See the pictures for more details.

We couldn't inspect the right side as it was parked in a tight space. The windshield has stone chips on the driver's side and the glass has delaminated along the edges. See the picture.

  • General condition:

Hard-to-find first-year model Saab 99 with a few minor issues. The car exudes authenticity. Overall, it can be described as being in used condition. It has been in the museum since 2016.

Owner's comment

Of course, I needed to have the first-year model of the Saab 99 in the museum. I bought this Saab in Uppsala from a pilot, and then drove it home to the museum in Vännäs. The 1969 model year of the Saab 99 holds a special place in my heart. The brand-new Saab model was referred to as "a broad-shouldered Swede" in Norwegian advertisements. In 1969, I recommended my friend, veterinarian Hellesnäs from Voss, to buy the new broad-shouldered Swede. He bought exactly one like this, with the same color and everything. It was sturdy, easy to drive, and with front-wheel drive, it sped like an arrow on the Norwegian mountain roads. Therefore, I call the 99 at the museum "The Veterinarian" and the color "veterinary blue" as a tribute to my old friend. (The color is actually called Husar Blue in Swedish and Middle Blue in English, color code B6.)

Facts about the model

The Saab 99 was introduced in 1967, but production didn't start until the 1969 model year. The Saab 99 was manufactured until 1984, when it was replaced by the short-lived model 90.

Early Saab 99s featured a 1.7-liter engine from Triumph. This engine was designed as a "split" V8 from larger Triumph cars. An interesting technical detail of the Triumph engine was that the same camshaft lobe operated both the intake and exhaust valves. One valve was directly actuated by the camshaft, while the other was operated by a rocker arm. This system meant that both valves had the same timing, and it worked well. The same engine was also used in the later Triumph Dolomite. The British engineering firm Ricardo worked with Saab during the 1960s and connected Saab with Triumph, leading to the collaboration that provided the Saab 99 with Triumph's 1.7-liter engine.

According to reports, there are 133 Saab 99s from the 1969 model year registered in Sweden as of June 2024.
