Description

Bilweb Auctions has been entrusted with selling the cars from the collection at Saab Memorial Hall, Sweden's most charming little Saab museum. The museum was founded by Norwegian Tron Bach, who moved to Sweden in 2011. After a busy career as a hotel owner, Tron relocated to a small farm in Gullsjö, Vännäs. When he discovered a worn and dented Saab 92 behind a shed, the idea began to take shape. He decided to start a Saab museum to honor Saab's Swedish cultural heritage—a car admired worldwide. Over the years the museum has been open, more than 1,000 visitors have come to this small Northern Swedish village to see the Saab museum. Tron feels that, with age, it is time to close his museum on a high note.

The museum will close around the time of the auction. Until then, we recommend a visit. For more information, visit Saab Memorial Hall.

At this auction, there are several cars we have not been able to remove from the premises. To do so, one of the walls must be demolished. This will be done at the closure so buyers can collect their cars. Please note that these vehicles have been off the road for an extended period, which means they may require more work to get them in order than similar models that have been driven continuously.

About the car:

An interesting Saab V4 in the delightful color of Indian Yellow with 5 registered owners, including car dealers, but only 2 users since 1977. Between 1977 and 1996, the car was owned by a lady named Ljungberg. From 1996 to 2016, it was owned by Saab collector Birger Mattson. In the video, Tron Bach explains how he found the car at the collector's home and how it took three years of negotiations before the car could be acquired for the Saab museum.

During our visit to Saab Memorial Hall and the inspection of the cars, we were impressed that the V4 had weathered its previous outdoor exposure so well. Naturally, there are some blemishes on the car, with a bit of surface rust, paint scratches, and other issues, but we believe it can be readied for inspection relatively quickly. The odometer shows 85,270 kilometers. We cannot guarantee this is accurate, but the condition suggests it hasn't traveled much more.

We want to emphasize that we have not been able to test drive the car or inspect the right side of the vehicle. The buyer will need to clean the fuel system, check the brakes, service the car, etc., before inspection.

Older inspection reports, the original jack, and tire tools are included. The spare wheel lacks a tire; see the picture.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

1.5-liter V4 engine with a rated output of 65 hp. Four-speed transmission with freewheel. According to reports, SMH's chief mechanic Sture inspected the technical aspects before the car was driven into the museum under its own power in 2016. The clutch was replaced, and a service was performed. We have not had the opportunity to retrieve and test drive this car. The fuel system needs to be drained and refilled with fresh gasoline before starting. The car fires and starts with starter fluid. See the video. The car is missing a start battery.

  • Interior condition:

The interior is in good condition with no major issues. Equipped with an aftermarket sports steering wheel, a very popular and period-appropriate accessory. The trunk is in excellent condition with the original mat in good shape.

  • Exterior condition:

Original paintwork. The hood was repainted before the car was placed in the museum. The paint has some wear, minor surface rust spots, and small scratches. Good bumpers and decorative strips. Equipped with additional Saab original reversing lights. The underside, as far as we could see, also looks good. See pictures.

  • General condition:

Overall impression is very positive. An Indian Yellow Saab V4 is on many enthusiasts' wish lists. It is rare to find one so well-preserved as this.

Owner's comment

I wanted to acquire an Indian Yellow V4 for the museum. It turned out there was one at "Birger in Bratten." He had only driven the V4 for a short period before parking it outside. His brother had frightened him by saying that the Saab V4 was a dangerous car model. So, there was actually nothing wrong with the car when he parked it. The first time I visited Birger, I saw cars parked everywhere. Among all the cars stood the fantastically well-preserved Indian Yellow V4. But it was not for sale, Birger said. I visited Birger many times and tried to buy the car. After 3 years, Birger finally said yes. I took the V4 on a trailer and drove it to Sture. He fixed what was needed to make the car drivable. After a few short test drives, we drove it into the museum.
