Description

Bilweb Auctions has been entrusted with selling the cars from the collection at Saab Memorial Hall, Sweden's most charming little Saab museum. The museum was founded by Norwegian Tron Bach, who moved to Sweden in 2011. After a busy career as a hotel owner, Tron relocated to a small farm in Gullsjö, Vännäs. When he discovered a worn and dented Saab 92 behind a shed, the idea began to take shape. He decided to start a Saab museum to honor Saab's Swedish cultural heritage—a car admired worldwide. Over the years the museum has been open, more than 1,000 visitors have come to this small Northern Swedish village to see the Saab museum. Tron feels that, with age, it is time to close his museum on a high note.

The museum will close around the time of the auction. Until then, we recommend a visit. For more information, visit Saab Memorial Hall.

At this auction, there are several cars we have not been able to remove from the premises. To do so, one of the walls must be demolished. This will be done at the closure so buyers can collect their cars. Please note that these vehicles have been off the road for an extended period, which means they may require more work to get them in order than similar models that have been driven continuously.

About the Car:

This model is rare as it was handmade in Nystad, Finland, making it the most luxurious Saab model before the Saab 9000 and the convertible were introduced in 1986. The background is that when the Wallenbergs invested in Saab in the late 1970s, they wanted the business elite to drive Saabs. This led to the development of the extended CD model. The model was 20 cm longer and always had a 145 hp turbo engine and a more luxurious interior, including reading lights and footrests in the back seat, among other features.

According to reports, this particular example was purchased in 1981 by Handelsbanken in Stockholm, where it served as an executive car. After its service with Handelsbanken, the car passed through a handful of owners before ending up at Saab Memorial Hall in 2021.

The odometer reads 196,050 kilometers. We have no reason to believe otherwise. The car comes with a spare wheel, jack, and a large mobile phone from that era. The phone is perfect for anyone wanting to call the Stockholm Stock Exchange for the latest listing of Fermenta shares.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Equipped with a four-cylinder turbocharged injection engine with a rated output of 143 horsepower and an automatic transmission. The car was last driven in 2021 when the museum acquired it. We made a brief attempt to start it but determined that a start service is necessary before making another attempt. We do not believe there is a major issue, as the car was driven into the museum under its own power in 2021. The car lacks functioning brakes. No technical functions have been tested by BWA. It is missing a start battery.

  • Interior condition:

Plush interior in good condition considering the mileage and age. The back seat features both special reading lights and footrests.

  • Exterior condition:

Original paint with some touch-ups and imperfections. There are surface rust spots, scratches, and a few small dents. See the pictures. We believe the car has held up unusually well, given that it was stored in a barn for over 20 years before coming to the museum. There are older visible metal repairs in the engine compartment. It was difficult to inspect the underside, so expect some rust to be present.

  • General condition:

Rare luxury model hand-built at the Finnish factory in Nystad. There are some blemishes and rust, but we only see opportunities. Perfect for those looking to acquire a hard-to-find CD Turbo for restoration.

Owner's comment

A 900 CD Turbo is a must-have in any Saab collection. It turned out to be very difficult to find. I got a tip from a visitor at the museum. There was a car stored in a barn in Sidensjö. In 2019, I visited the owner and tried to buy the car, but it was impossible. After a few years, I received a call from the owner, Astor Lind. He had reconsidered and was willing to sell the car to the museum. So, 23 years after it was driven into Astor's barn, we rolled it out and loaded it onto a car trailer. I received great help from my neighbor Kjell-Arne Hermansson. We took the CD to our chief mechanic, Ture Karlsson, in Tavelsjö. He replaced the fuel pump, hoses, fuel filter, and various other parts. Then it started up nicely. The engine, turbo, and transmission worked well, but the car had no brakes. We then transported the car home to the museum, where it has remained since 2021.

Facts about the model

Fewer than 100 examples of the Saab 900 CD made it to Sweden, with most being sold to governors and industrial magnates who didn't want to drive Volvos. It was a particular favorite of the Wallenberg family. Unfortunately, most of these cars have rusted away, and only a few remain. Today, this model is worth significantly more than a regular Saab 900 Turbo.
