"A pleasant favorite of the Swedish people, here in Standard trim, which has been thoroughly inspected, upgraded, and well-maintained in recent years."

Description

A PV 544 A in its simplest configuration for its time, equipped with a B16 engine producing 60 horsepower and a four-speed manual transmission. In terms of appearance, the standard model did not feature chrome trim around the front and rear windows, non-opening rear side windows, and no chrome on the fenders. The interior was more spartan. The car has had several owners but appears to have led a relatively calm life and been well taken care of. The current owner and his wife have owned the car for five years and have had it repainted, along with the installation of various new moldings, rubber mats, and interior details.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The car starts easily and runs great. Everything appears to be in good working order. While it has not been inspected on a lift, the underside looks clean and well-maintained based on the visible areas.

  • Interior condition:

The car is in great condition, with a clean and intact appearance. Parts that have experienced significant wear, such as trims, rubber mats, and certain fabric/vinyl interior components, have been replaced. The headliner is in good condition but shows some signs of wear. Overall, the car has a nice overall impression with a certain level of patina.

  • Exterior condition:

The car has undergone a recent repaint, resulting in a glossy and smooth finish. The glass, chrome, and rubber trims are in good condition. The wheels and tires, as well as the exterior of the trunk and engine compartment, are tidy and well-maintained. Overall, the car's exterior presents itself nicely.

  • General condition:

The PV 444/544 is the quintessential car of the Swedish folkhem (welfare state) era, a time when we listened to the radio show Karusellen and watched Hylands hörna on TV. In the transition from the 1950s to the 1960s, as more people gained the financial means to buy a car, many chose the PV as their first new vehicle. Particularly in the working class, where saving up for major purchases was common, the PV Standard or Favorit became a popular choice. People would walk or bike to work, using the car for special occasions. This particular car is a delightful survivor that is in excellent collector's condition, capturing the spirit of the time. It is a classic with soul and a nostalgic feel.

Facts about the model

When the new Amazon was introduced in 1956, many believed that the "old" PV 444 would retire. But Volvo surprised everyone by relaunching the model in August 1958, now named the PV 544. The upgraded car was intended to complement the new Amazon, featuring a larger one-piece curved windshield and a larger rear window, giving it a more modern appearance. It also received new, larger taillights. Inside, there were horizontal instruments and a padded upper dashboard. The rear seat became more spacious and was advertised as a three-seater. Initially, it was available in Standard, Special I and II, and Sport versions. The Sport version came with standard three-point seat belts.

The simpler Standard version, priced at just under 10,000 SEK for the 1960 model year, served as the entry-level model for a new Volvo. Those who opted for this version had to do without chrome trim, passenger sun visor, trip meter (replaced by the number "544"), and other details, but it was still a new car, a Swedish-built Volvo.

Production of the PV 544 came to an end on October 20th, with a total of 444,000 cars built.
