Volvo 944 GL 2,3 — 1991

A tidy and well-functioning Volvo 940, one of the earliest produced. It has had few owners, and the mileage is very reasonable for the model.

"The fact that this Volvo is in such fine original condition and that it is an early example are two factors that will only make this car even more interesting over time."

Description

This Volvo 940 was built during the very first month of production, June 1990, and was registered in September the same year as a 1991 model. It has had only a few owners and was stored for 13 years by a previous owner. It has now been put back on the road and is inspected and approved until September 30.

The car is in very good original condition and has never suffered any major rust damage requiring repair. The spare wheel, jack, and original tool kit are all present. The owner’s manual and service book are missing, and one set of keys is included.

The car is roadworthy and presents well throughout—from the well-preserved, rust-protected body to the clean and intact interior.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The engine and gearbox start and run well. No unusual noises are heard from the chassis, and the brakes function properly. The Volvo has recently been serviced with new oil and an oil filter. It has also received a new mass airflow sensor and water pump, meaning the coolant has been replaced and the drive belts checked.
However, the timing belt has not been replaced, and it is unclear when it was last done. It is worth noting that the B230 engine is of the non-interference type, meaning that a broken timing belt will simply cause the engine to stop rather than result in internal damage.
The fan and seat heaters have been tested and are working. During braking, the bulb failure warning light occasionally illuminates—a common issue on the 940—most likely due to a ground fault in one of the brake lights. The digital outside temperature gauge is not functioning.

  • Interior condition

Clean and intact interior. There are a few very minor marks on the left rear door panel—see images. Original Volvo rubber floor mats are missing in the front. A period-correct original CR-702 Volvo radio is fitted in the dashboard.

  • Exterior condition

Straight and virtually rust-free body. The paint is glossy and could shine even more with a machine polish. Any imperfections are minimal: there is a small touch-up in the middle of the right front door, a tiny rust spot in a seam at the rear panel, and two minor repairs over rust on the rear wheel arches—see images.

The bumpers and side mirrors are faded and patchy. The wheel covers are in good condition but are not correct for a 940, as they come from a Volvo S/V70. All four tires have acceptable tread, though they are of different brands. Some rust is present on the engine block heater connector. The underbody has been treated with rust protection.

  • General condition

A mechanically sound and visually appealing 940 that, with just under 200,000 km on the odometer, still has plenty left to offer.

Facts about the model

Volvo has had several long-lived model series, and many of them have been renamed after undergoing major updates. This was the case when the PV 444 became the PV 544, and the same happened when the 740/760 evolved into the 940/960—while the 740 continued alongside for a few years.

Volvo had deliberately avoided major model year updates to the 760 and 740 so as not to interfere with the development of the all-new 850. However, by the late 1980s it became clear that the model range needed to be refreshed. The new 940 and 960 sedans were to receive a completely redesigned rear end, while retaining the existing doors and roof. Since the rear window of the 760/740 was flat, it proved difficult to achieve a more rounded shape. The head of design chose to move forward with his vision regardless, resulting in the 900 series receiving a new roof and a more curved rear window.

The new trunk lid, which extended down between the tail lights, was in line with contemporary design trends and lowered the loading height from 80 to 68 cm. While the 960 received a new engine and automatic transmission, the 940 borrowed more from its predecessor, the 740. Its engine was an updated version of the 2.3-liter four-cylinder, featuring a new cylinder head and camshaft, now producing 130 hp.

The 940 and 960 were launched in the autumn of 1990 as 1991 model year cars. The automotive press was not particularly impressed—“In old tracks” was one headline in Vi Bilägare. Throughout the 1990s, the 940 series was gradually developed. For the 1992 model year, it received the safety innovation Side Impact Protection System (SIPS), and during the 1995 model year a new low-pressure turbo engine was introduced.

Despite appearing somewhat dated even when new, this did not deter buyers. In the autumn of 1997, Volvo had to increase production and hire 400 temporary workers. The final Volvo 940 was built at the Torslanda plant on February 4, 1998, and the following day a ceremony was held where a customer received the last ordered car as a gift.

After that, there were no more rear-wheel-drive Volvos with a solid rear axle and cast-iron engine block. Some call the 940 the last “true” Volvo, but what is clear is that it was the last of its kind—and that is something appreciated today, with the model now enjoying a strong following among enthusiasts of all ages.
