Description

The current owner purchased the car at the large car market in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in the fall of 1988, where he was stationed at the time. It was lightly used, with only 1,300 km on the clock, very dusty from the desert, and originally sold in Qatar. He drove the car to a Jaguar workshop in Riyadh for inspection and service, then took it home as part of his moving goods just over a year later. The car was registered for road use in Sweden just before midsummer 1990. The latest major service was done at Joe's Garage on October 4, 2022, at 103,880 km, and the most recent approved inspection was carried out on April 24, 2024, at 104,140 km. The car currently has a total mileage of 105,110 km.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Jaguar's V12 engine has sometimes had its share of preconceived notions, but when properly cared for and serviced, it generally works as expected with mechanical things. The owner has certainly never experienced any major issues during the nearly 35 years and 90,000 km he has driven the car. Today, it also runs flawlessly, with just a little hesitation when starting up after the winter on old fuel. Over the years, the car has been fitted with a stronger starter motor and has received regular maintenance, including oil changes, spark plugs, and various filters. There is a slight leak between the engine and the gearbox, and the car would benefit from a brake fluid change, along with replacing the brake fluid level sensor. A new one, not made of natural cork, is included.

  • Interior condition:

The leather interior has recently been refreshed with cleaning, conditioning, and re-dyeing where needed. Some wood trim details have also been replaced with new parts.

An older alarm is installed and works if desired, but it’s not necessary to use it to lock the car. The air conditioning blows cold and works well.

  • Exterior condition:

The typical color for the area, white, is in good condition. The car was repainted in Riyadh after the purchase in 1989. A new soft top was sewn during the pandemic years, and it is therefore in very good condition. In the pictures, the front lip is slightly damaged, but it has now been reattached with the correct clips.

  • General condition:

Surprisingly good overall condition, a nice and fresh XJS that seems to be in excellent technical condition as well. It makes it even more enjoyable to drive with a Jaguar V12 engine in front of you.

Facts about the model

The 1985 Jaguar XJ-SC is a somewhat rare variant of the classic Jaguar XJS model, which was introduced in 1975 as a replacement for the E-Type. Unlike the regular XJS coupe, the XJ-SC was a targa version with removable roof panels and a folding rear roof behind the B-pillar. This solution was partly due to Jaguar's technical and structural challenges at the time in creating a fully convertible model based on the XJS. The XJ-SC was produced between 1983 and 1988. It was primarily offered with Jaguar's classic 5.3-liter V12 engine, often paired with an automatic transmission.

The characteristic targa roof with removable panels made the model different from pure convertibles, but also somewhat more compromised in terms of roofline and practicality. The XJ-SC is significantly rarer than both the coupe and later convertible versions, with only 5,013 units produced during its production run. One could say that it paved the way for the pure convertible, the XJ-S Convertible, which was introduced in 1988.
