Volkswagen Typ 181 1600 — 1974

Wonderful history, one owner family, low mileage, and a worn-in condition that doesn’t seem to match the odometer reading. Yet, despite appearances, those two variables do, in fact, share a connection.

"Pleasant on the road, with the hum of the chunkier tires against the asphalt. Otherwise, it delivers the typical mechanical feel and driving experience of a classic Volkswagen Type 1 — complete with plenty of fresh air at every seat."

"Pleasant on the road, with the hum of the chunkier tires against the asphalt. Otherwise, it delivers the typical mechanical feel and driving experience of a classic Volkswagen Type 1 — complete with plenty of fresh air at every seat."

Description

It arrived new in Sweden in April 1975, imported by the current owner’s grandparents. Even back then, the car was driven sparingly and often left parked outdoors. It was never vandalized, but exposure to the elements over time did leave its mark — with some wear to the paint and surface rust in vulnerable areas.

The most recent and final approved inspection under current regulations was carried out on March 1, 2019, at 62,850 kilometers. During the 2003 inspection, however, the inspector reportedly forgot their glasses and mistakenly recorded an “8” instead of a “6.” The total mileage today stands at 63,260 kilometers, which, according to both the owners and supporting documentation, is the actual distance driven. The car truly hasn’t rolled more than that — and that in itself is quite an achievement for a Volkswagen Type 181.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The engine was serviced about a year ago with new ignition components, a new fuel pump, fan belt, and a carburetor inspection.

  • Interior condition:

In all its simplicity, the interior is undamaged and in solid condition. It features older front seat belts with retractors and fixed lap belts in the rear.

When the car was imported, regulations required rear seat belts, so the seat latch bracket was bolted in place — meaning the rear seat can no longer be folded down.

  • Exterior condition:

The paint is dull, there are blemishes and touch-ups, and there’s surface rust on the floor and in the front and rear suspension — but the car is inspected and approved, and the whole vehicle exudes a raw, user-friendly attitude.

Scraping off loose undercoating, flakes, and debris from the underside and applying fresh rust protection — for example, using linseed oil-based products — can be both an enjoyable and satisfying project.

The soft top is intact except for the window, but since the entire assembly is easy to remove, it’s also easy to bring it to a specialist who repairs (plastic-welds) convertible windows and similar materials.

  • General condition:

Fun and fuss-free, with loads of usability and driving joy in good weather conditions. Its clear patina and raw presence make it especially appealing to a VW enthusiast with a soft spot for rugged originality, restomods, and other tastefully rough-around-the-edges builds.

Facts about the model

VW 181 – Kurierwagen, The Thing, VW Safari, Kübelwagen – a beloved vehicle with many names, is a prime example of maximized German stripped-down functionality. Technically, only the earliest models produced for the German war machine during WWII were called Kübelwagen Type 82, but the name has stuck and is still often used to describe this type of vehicle.

Long after the end of the war, VW revived the basic Kübelwagen design with the 1969 Type 181, developed for the German Federal Armed Forces and later also produced for the civilian market. It became known as the “Thing” in the U.S., “Trekker” in the U.K., and “Safari” in Mexico.

Although the Type 181 and Type 82 share a similar look and overall concept, virtually none of the parts were interchangeable between the two models.
