"A very charming Volkswagen featuring a semaphore turn signal and the desirable oval rear window."

Description

This VW Oval has had only three owners. It feels largely untouched and is in well-preserved condition with a charming patina. A fun detail is the car’s semaphore turn signals. One of the front fenders may have been replaced, but otherwise the car appears to be unwelded. It may have been repainted at some point, though if so, it was done many years ago and is difficult to determine.

The first owner of this VW ran a car dealership in Norrtälje. The car remained in the Norrtälje area as it changed hands. The current owner purchased it in 1982 and used it sparingly during the summers, attending a few car meets in the Roslagen region. In recent years, the car has mostly been stationary due to the owner’s age. His brother, a former car mechanic, rebuilt the engine approximately 30 years ago. The last recorded service was done on August 25, 2020, according to a handwritten note.

The car is currently inspected and roadworthy, but a general check-up of its systems may be advisable. It is said that the rear decklid might be from a later model year, although this has not been verified.

A set of keys comes with the car, along with various old service records, other documents, and some spare parts—see photos. The odometer reading suggests it has likely rolled over once.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The engine and drivetrain sound as they should but may need an inspection, as the car has been sitting for some time. The braking system is functional but could also benefit from a check-up for the same reason. The semaphore indicators work, but sometimes get stuck in the extended position.

The car is fitted with newer tires that have good tread depth. The locking mechanism on the left vent window is broken—see photo for reference.

  • Interior condition:

Original upholstery with a few small holes and some stains. The headliner is intact and in good condition. The floor mats are slightly worn but still in decent shape. Overall, the interior feels authentic and has a very charming patina.

  • Exterior condition:

Possibly an older repaint. There are a few dents and scratches in the paint, mainly on the rear fenders—see photos for details. The car’s chrome trim is in very good condition. Underneath, it appears to be in excellent and solid shape, with well-preserved undercoating.

  • General condition:

A black Volkswagen with a charming patina, in very nice and appealing condition. With a proper check-up and service, it's ready to hit the road.

Facts about the model

The Volkswagen Beetle was first sold in Sweden in 1948, and in 1953, this particular model with the iconic oval rear window was introduced. These were produced until 1957, before larger windows and a redesigned decklid were introduced in 1958. The lines, curves, and decklid of the oval-window models are closely tied to the original Beetle design, which makes them highly sought after today.

1957 also marked the final year with the classic roller-type gas pedal. Could this be where the Swedish expression "Full rulle" (“full speed ahead”) originated?

In Mexico, production of the VW Type 1—the Beetle—continued all the way until 2003. By the time manufacturing ended, nearly 21.4 million units had been produced worldwide.
