Volkswagen Golf GTI MK2 G60 — 1991

An iconic top-of-the-line hot hatch from the 1990s — the Mark II Golf GTI G60, equipped with a 1.8-litre supercharged engine producing around 160 hp. These are rare cars today, with just over 60 still registered on the road in Sweden.

"You forget how many memories come rushing back behind the wheel of a GTI — especially when the supercharger kicks in. It’s a blast to drive."

Description

The car was sold new in Sweden and has had a total of five registered owners. The current owner, who also owns several other VW models, purchased the car five years ago. Aside from necessary mechanical work such as the timing belt, water pump, dampers, and routine servicing, the car remains just as it was when he bought it.

He’s now selling it due to family and work commitments, which leave little time to enjoy the car properly. It has recently been taken for inspection, and the only noted issues are a binding front left brake and insufficient braking effect from the handbrake—simple fixes before it’s ready for the road again.

Over the years, most of these cars have been heavily modified, but apart from the rear bumper, rear lights, and tailgate, this one remains largely original. It even still has the original specification sticker in the boot — a detail appreciated by true Volkswagen enthusiasts. It has also held up well against rust, as seen in the photos.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The car starts instantly, and the engine runs smoothly without hesitation. It drives well through the gearbox, and while the brakes are functioning, they will need attention to pass inspection. There are a few missing plastic covers on the engine, specifically over the alternator and radiator. Recent maintenance includes freshly painted wheels in 2020, new tires, shock absorbers, and a new battery in 2024, along with a timing belt, water pump, and full service (oil, filter, and coolant) completed in 2023.

  • Interior condition:

Interior is clean and tidy, with all seats in good condition, showing normal signs of wear but no damage. The headliner is clean, and the manual sunroof is fully functional. The dashboard is in good condition, with all gauges and the trip computer working properly — no pixel issues on the display. The passenger door card is in good shape, while the driver’s door card is cracked and worn and would benefit from replacement. The tailgate needs to be opened via the switch under the dashboard, as the rear handle has been deleted. The electric mirrors are not working. However, the car retains its complete parcel shelf, free from speakers or cut-outs.

  • Exterior condition:

Bodywork is straight and, surprisingly, largely rust-free, with only a few small blisters around the windscreen wipers, the right rear top edge of the roof, and along the bonnet edges (see pictures). The underbody is clean, with only minor areas of surface rust and a dent under the passenger side, but no issues have been noted in inspection reports. The paintwork is light and presentable, with evidence of earlier repainting on the doors and boot lid, and some touch-ups visible on the bonnet. The boot lid is non-standard and has some older, drilled holes from previously fitted wind deflectors.

  • General condition:

With just a few simple fixes needed to pass inspection, I would enjoy the car as it is for now, and over time, refit an original boot lid and bumper to restore its original look. Replacing the driver’s side door card would also be a nice improvement. Then you’ll have a fun and desirable hot hatch that’s only going up in value.
