BMW 2002 — 1973

An icon and survivor from the turn of the 60s and 70s, this vehicle is relatively unique today considering its history and condition. It has had three owners within the same family—father, mother, and son. The car is completely in its original condition and has only traveled 56 020 km.

"I've written this before and now it's time again. Those somewhat improbable vehicles with a single owner or family ownership, low mileage, and well-maintained, occasionally appear and take your breath away.

This is a pleasant car, free from complicated "i-features" that could malfunction. It also sports a sober color combination and the classic design with round tail lights and a shiny grille. There are a few details that need attention, and a car that hasn't been regularly driven in recent years should always be checked thoroughly. However, the car has been started and warmed up every year."

Description

When the current owner was five years old, in the fall of 1972, he stood with his father outside Förenade Bil in Malmö. His father pointed to a wine-red BMW in the showroom window and told him that he had just purchased the car.

The car found a good home with the family and led a peaceful life there. It has never been driven in winter, has always been kept in a heated garage, and has been Tectyl-treated underneath multiple times. A custom-fitted cover has been in the car since it was new. Combined with the low mileage, this means the vehicle is well-maintained and in very fine original condition.

The car comes with instruction and service booklets as well as inspection reports. It was recently inspected on April 10, 2024, without any issues and is ready to drive.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The car starts easily and performs well in terms of the engine and drivetrain. Steering, brakes, and other mechanical systems appear to be functioning well. However, the windshield washer is not working; the pump clicks but does not spray. The last service was done two years ago, including oil and filter changes. It hasn't been checked on a lift from underneath, but from what could be seen, everything looked good.

New information: The day after the photography session, when the car was driven 30 kilometers to an inspection, the condition underneath was confirmed. Two photos were also taken of the undercarriage while it was on the lift.

  • Interior condition:

The interior is in exquisite original condition. A custom-fitted seat cover has been on the car since new and was carefully removed from the passenger seat for photography. The carpets, door panels, dashboard, and headliner are also in very fine original condition. A period-correct, functioning Blaupunkt radio has been installed since the car was new. All electrical components are working. There is an aftermarket switch in the glove compartment for starting and theft protection. Custom-fitted protective mats from BMW have been in the car since new. A decal from Förenade Bil in Malmö with the name of the first owner on the driver’s door and BMW break-in instructions at the bottom of the windshield are nice historical markers.

  • Exterior condition:

The original paint is in very fine condition, as are the shiny, glass, and rubber details. There are some damages to the trims, especially on the right rear door from door dings. The rims are slightly scuffed and the tires are older but still have good tread depth; however, they are Michelin XZX tires from week 15 of 1988! Both the engine and trunk compartments are also in fine original condition. There are some minor signs of rust in the engine compartment at the edge near the headlight area. There is also some paint flaking in the engine compartment. A detailing would yield a nice result. The spare wheel in the trunk appears to be unused and has the original Dunlop tire. The tools and jack are original.

  • General condition:

A delightful little family car with sporting ambitions for the individualist, as it was described back in the day. It was relatively common on our roads but is now endangered—especially in this exquisite original condition. Together with its history and mileage, it makes for an interesting enthusiast and collector's vehicle, from a time when different manufacturers had their own unique solutions and characteristics. Truly a classic!

Facts about the model

After restarting production post-World War II, BMW offered a diverse range of products including motorcycles, small cars, luxury vehicles, and sports cars. In the early 1960s, they began to streamline their lineup, and the Neue Klasse—a larger midsize car with a sleek, spacious body and modern design—became a success. By the mid-1960s, BMW recognized the need for a smaller car to meet the demands of the growing middle class. From the successful Neue Klasse, they developed a new vehicle, initially equipped with the 1600 engine from the larger car but with two doors, simply called the 1600-2. The rest is history and a success story.

Over time, the '2' was incorporated into the model designation, and the cars came to be known as the 1502, 1602, 1802, and 2002, corresponding to their engine power. Various epithets and letters were added depending on the equipment. The lineup included two-door cars, convertible versions, a two doors Touring, and topping the range, a turbocharged version launched in 1973. The 02 series continued production until 1977 with minor cosmetic upgrades. Regardless of the engine configuration, it was a lively and enjoyable car to drive with excellent road handling characteristics. Consequently, the model was favored by drivers with sporty ambitions, including the racing community. A total of 868,000 02s were manufactured from 1966 to 1977.
