Description
It is possible that the owner imported the car to Slovenia that same year and crossed the border to the nearest Volvo workshop for servicing. After that, there are no further entries in the service book. This would also explain why Swedish authorities later noted the car as “registered abroad” in February 1977—based on documentation from Slovenia used during its eventual registration process.
While abroad, the owner reportedly drove the car sparingly, often due to suspicion surrounding someone driving such an exclusive Western Volvo.
Just over ten years ago, the first owner’s son advertised the car for sale, and the current owner purchased it following a tip from a German friend. The journey home began with export plates from Slovenia but was interrupted when something broke down in Austria, forcing the car to be left at a workshop. The new owner flew home, then later returned to make another attempt to drive it back to Sweden.
By then, it was 2015—a time of significant migration pressures in Europe—which made extending temporary licenses and export plates in Slovenia impractical. Instead, the car was transported by train from Munich to Hamburg. From there, the owner drove—somewhat adventurously, without insurance or other formalities—to the ferry in Kiel for transport to Gothenburg.
The car then remained off the road for about two years for various work and was finally registered for road use in Sweden in 2017, using Slovenian documents showing its first registration in 1977. The most recent—and final required under current regulations—approved inspection was carried out on September 13, 2019.
Technical data
Condition
-
Mechanical condition
The engine and gearbox feel well-matched and perform as expected, working harmoniously with the chassis dynamics and brakes. The car has received continuous service, maintenance, and care from a local specialist workshop, Retro-Service in Särö. Work carried out there ranges from cosmetic detailing of the engine and engine bay, and installation of overdrive, to ongoing attention to smaller maintenance needs.
The speedometer was also replaced there following a failure of the needle and was adjusted to match the recorded mileage at the time. It now reads 111,700 km. Whether this reflects the actual total mileage is uncertain, although the car’s history of careful and limited use—particularly during its time in the former Yugoslavia—may help explain the relatively low figure. -
Interior condition
Leather interior in good condition—some cleaning and conditioning would do it good, even though it already presents well. A bit of regular leather care each year is always beneficial. The headliner, door panels, and dashboard are all in good shape. The purposeful installation of a period-correct radio suggests a thoughtful and deliberate sense of style.
-
Exterior condition
Many Volvo enthusiasts consider this to be the most attractive color for the 140 GL version, along with light blue metallic. It has been partially repainted at home, and some differences in shade can be seen under varying light conditions.
Older Toyo tires with good tread are fitted on original steel wheels with correct trim rings. -
General condition
An appealing model with an entertaining history, presented in a pleasant and largely original specification. For many 140 enthusiasts, the 1973 model—with its slimmer bumpers and other model-year updates—is the most attractive and therefore also the most sought-after. The bulkier bumpers introduced for the 1974 models don’t enjoy quite the same appreciation.
