Description

The current owner bought the car from a previous owner in the US who believed that a red Plymouth Custom Suburban — the station wagon version of the Fury — should be The Mother of Christine, and named her Nandine. That owner even put together a small binder/book to document and celebrate the idea.
In 2020, the car made its way from Chicago to Sweden and into the hands of its current owner, who has a soft spot for large American station wagons from the 1950s and ’60s.
Following the success of the film Christine in 1983, the Plymouth Fury has consistently held a strong market value — especially the red-and-white versions. Many owners in the US have built their Fury as an homage or clone of the movie’s lead character: a sinister, malevolent car that slowly transforms its owner into the devil himself.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The automatic transmission is operated via a push-button panel, and the car starts in neutral. There is no “Park” position to lock the gearbox, which is why wheel chocks were standard equipment — they’re stored under the cargo area hatch next to the spare tire.
The engine is said to be a polyspheric version of the 318 — a 5.2-liter V8 with special heads that allowed for a more efficient intake with larger valves and increased power.
The car has recently been fitted with new brake shoes, fittings, and brake hoses.

  • Interior condition:

Clean and tidy in original condition, with a few loose sections at the rear edge of the foldable bench and rear backrest. When folded down, the space and practicality of this 1950s American station wagon classic become clear. Also worth noting are the swiveling front seats — a nice touch for comfort-minded customers.

  • Exterior condition:

Older paint in presentable and pleasant condition, with normal wear from having been a collector’s vehicle for many years with only occasional use. Good chrome and nice period-correct design details — plus an integrated stainless steel roof rack.

  • General condition:

Station wagon versions of models that also came as sedans or coupés are often more worn and used — and therefore rarer — simply because they more frequently reached the end of their life cycle.
This particular model series from Plymouth also had poor rust protection and was known for corrosion issues. As a result, a well-preserved station wagon in good condition is often more highly valued by enthusiasts today. This example definitely qualifies in that category.

Facts about the model

The cult classic Christine from 1983, directed by John Carpenter and based on Stephen King’s novel, turned the Plymouth Fury into a true icon — a cult car whose value still reflects that status today.
Other models from the same series — the Suburban, Belvedere, and Savoy — have also inherited some of the fame, with their values boosted by association with the movie star.
A total of 16 different cars from the model range were used during filming — many of them crashed, burned, or wrecked.
When Stephen King wrote the novel in the early ’80s, he deliberately chose the Plymouth Fury — a model he felt was overlooked at the time. A knowingly passionate choice of leading role, in other words.
