"The car's birth is documented, but its years in the USA and California are unknown. However, since its return to Sweden, it has undergone extensive renovation and is now in very good condition."

Description

This wagon was transported sometime during the summer of 1965, from Torslanda and Gothenburg across the Atlantic. Beautifully red in color code 46, Cherry Red, with an interior in 53-511, black & grey. The destination was California, where it spent its first fifty years. In the USA, it was designated as a 1966 model year, but as an F-registered car, it is considered a 1965 model year according to Swedish standards. In 2018, it ended up at Cooper Motors in Illinois. That's where the current owner found it, in an ad on eBay. At some point during its time in the USA, the engine was replaced with a B20. In 2019, it was brought back to Sweden, where extensive restoration work began.

The sunny climate in California meant that the body was in good condition with few signs of rust, but there were repairs made to the front floor and some minor repairs in the trunk. All panels and fenders are smooth and appear to be untouched. During the restoration, the car was stripped of all glass parts and interior, then painted in the original color. New bumpers and "America bars" were installed. New 5.5-inch wheels, tires with white sidewalls, and a new windshield with tinted glass were added. New interior, seats, rear seat, headliner, carpets, side panels, and luggage compartment from VP Autoparts were installed by a professional upholsterer.

All parts related to safety have been replaced, such as brakes and tie rods. The engine has not been opened, but it runs perfectly at all speeds. Newly refurbished SU carburetors and a new 2-inch Sports Car exhaust system were installed. A B18 from that era can be purchased if desired.

Approved during registration and inspection in 2022/2023.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts easily and runs smoothly and steadily in both engine and drivetrain. Solid and fine chassis with new wear parts and brakes. Not inspected on a lift, but from what could be seen and reviews from vehicle inspections, it suggests a clean and tidy undercarriage. Delightful ear candy from the 2-inch system. Everything appears to work as intended.

  • Interior condition:

The entire interior is in very good condition, with most components being new. The dashboard and instrument cluster are intact and in good condition, and everything appears to function well. There is a missing trim piece underneath at the front.

  • Exterior condition:

New, flawless paintwork, with only a minimal dent on the rear hatch, bottom right. Likely garage damage or similar. Glass and chrome are in excellent condition. New bumpers and "America bars." Missing rubber at the bars' passage in the rear. Some chrome trim has patina with minor scratches, after all these years. Nice newer wheels and tires (Vitour). Engine and trunk compartments are in very good condition.

  • General condition:

This wagon has both Swedish and American history, which is reflected in some attributes. Even though the car has been restored, it is, in fact, largely untouched in many respects, as the body, despite nearly 60 years, has never been more than marginally affected by rust. A later model PV Sport, renovated and road-ready, in the delightful cherry red color with influences from California, is today a highly sought-after classic and enthusiast car.

Facts about the model

Volvo unveiled its new "post-war car," the PV 444, in September 1944, but it wasn't until February 1947 that the first cars were delivered. The PV 444 model was produced until 1957, after which it was upgraded with the PV 544 model, offered from the model years 1958 to 1966. Initially, the PV 544 had a B16 engine, but from the model year 1962, it was equipped with a B18 engine. The Sport model received a slightly detuned P1800 engine and dual SU carburetors. The last PV 544 models were manufactured in the fall of 1965 and designated as model G, sold as 1966 model years. The very last car was a black Sport, which went directly to the Volvo Museum. The PV 544 Sport was both a sought-after and, for its time, a powerful car. In the Sport model with the dual SU carburetors, the G model produced 95 horsepower.
