"A rolling British gentlemen's club with all its attributes. Glossy paintwork, chrome, high-quality leather upholstery with plenty of wood, fabric, and lambswool carpets. Lavishly equipped with all the amenities of its time. The picnic tables, as well as the flasks and whiskey glasses in the rear armrest, create a special ambiance for the passengers. Add to that a deep rumbling V8 with turbo boost that provides speed capabilities beyond the norm. Many of us surely remember when Åke Borglund from Teknikens Värld set the Swedish speed record of over 230 km/h in the autumn of 1987 - in a Bentley Turbo R.

However, this carriage has led a quiet life and is in exceptionally fine and well-preserved original condition."

Description

On March 2nd, 1988, this carriage was delivered by Förenade Bil in Gothenburg to its first owner. They also handled the servicing for him. It was transferred to various companies owned by the owner, but eventually, the second owner/user entered the picture and acquired it in December 1991. He was a devoted Bentley collector and kept the car until April 2022. It mostly stood in the collection and was driven sparingly over the years but received regular servicing including oil and filter changes, lubrication of rubber seals, etc., and was started up at regular intervals. The current and third owner acquired the carriage in April 2022. He too is a collector of exclusive cars. As the car had been stationary for much of its life, he took it to Aston Hill, a reputable workshop for English luxury and sports cars in Lidingö. They conducted an extensive overhaul with new fluids, spark plugs, replacement of steering linkage, fine adjustment of the gas-hydraulic suspension/damping, fine-tuning of all power windows, refurbishment of the AC, and both signal horns of the car. According to the workshop manager at Aston Hill, this carriage is now one of Sweden's best Bentley Turbo R to drive. Well taken care of, with few owners, low mileage, and now thoroughly inspected for use and driving experiences.
Recently inspected without remarks and ready to drive, also exempt from tax due to its age. Original handbooks are included.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts easily and runs smoothly and comfortably in the engine. During test driving, the journey felt tight and solid. Everything appears to be in very good condition and functioning well. Not checked on a lift, but both the workshop and inspection commend the condition. From what could be seen, it looked good.

  • Interior condition:

An inviting interior in exquisite original condition. Mildly patinated seats and rear seat in exclusive leather, Cream (parchment hide). Fine fabric carpets and exclusive hand-stitched lambswool carpets in matching color, sourced from Flying Spares outside Birmingham. Door panels, headliner, and all other leather details and lower edges on the doors, along with carpets, are likewise in excellent condition. All wood details are also in very fine condition. All controls and electronics appear to function well.

  • Exterior condition:

Glossy and fine original paintwork, Ebony, with well-preserved hand-painted pinstriping. All chrome details, lights, glass, rubber, and emblems in exquisite condition, as well as the rims. The tires, Avon Turbospeed, are also in good condition, but their age is uncertain. Engine and luggage compartments in very fine and well-preserved original condition. The tool shelf appears to be complete.

  • General condition:

This is an impressive car with an aura of British luxury and premium craftsmanship. Being a Bentley Turbo R, it also boasts ample power and speed capabilities, along with matching road handling. When we add its history and condition to the equation, we can conclude that this is a true classic and a collector's item with significant automotive historical value.

Facts about the model

Bentley was founded by Walter Owen Bentley in 1919. During the 1920s, it achieved racing success and produced carriages with sporty ambitions. However, the stock market crash at the turn of the 1920s and 1930s marked a downturn, and Bentley ended up under the ownership of rival Rolls-Royce. Bentley became an alternative to Rolls-Royce but with slightly lower status/price, although it still maintained its sporty ambitions. By the 1960s and 1970s, the cars were essentially identical with minor cosmetic differences. In 1971, Rolls-Royce went bankrupt due to significant issues in its aircraft engine division. The company then fell under government control. Eventually, the company was restructured, and in 1973, the car division became independent and initiated a project called internally "SZ" towards the 1980s. During this period, experimentation with turbocharging began. In 1980, the new models Silver Spirit/Spur and Mulsanne were launched in Nice. This marked the fourth generation with shared standard bodies from Rolls-Royce and Bentley. The turbocharged version, which had been under experimentation, was introduced for the 1983 model year, initially only for Bentley. It featured an aluminum V8 engine with a Garrett truck turbocharger. The first version of the Mulsanne Turbo was manufactured from 1983 to 1985. Subsequently, the Turbo R was introduced, with "R" standing for road holding, featuring a stiffer chassis and firmer suspension, along with a painted grille and aluminum wheels. This was seen as a nod to Bentley's earlier image as "a sporting car". The 1988 model year had 330 horsepower. The model was produced until 1998.
