"Nice Fiat 500, a small red rocket that both sounds and looks impressive."

Description

This is an early car with genuine Swedish history. It arrived in Sweden in the fall of 1957 but was registered as a 1958 model year. According to the information, the chassis number is 441. In 1961, it was already tuned to 650cc with a Holly carburetor and other modifications on the gearbox. The chassis was also modified along with sport mufflers and instrumentation. It is said to have been driven in competitions.

In 1978, it was acquired by a classic car enthusiast, and at that time, the current owner test drove the car. It was fast but not entirely reliable and needed an overhaul (see photo).

In 2017, the current owner had a chance to buy the car, which was disassembled in parts but painted and "ready" for assembly (see photo from Klassiker magazine report). The restoration began, and the final work was carried out during 2018-2019.

Today, it is a small red gem with impressive performance capabilities. The original 13 horsepower is now somewhere between 54-60 horsepower. The block is original and matching number, but the cylinders with pistons are 750cc. New bearings, a different oil pump, larger oil pan, Abarth cam, and a newer Weber 34 with electric supply have been installed. The electrical system is now 12 volts. The four-speed gearbox is still there but with different gearing. This car can really move...

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

A car that combines original condition with a significant upgrade of the engine and performance. All work has been carried out under the leadership of a Fiat enthusiast with good knowledge and contacts, to ensure that everything works well. It is a high-performance engine that requires a little extra revs to perform at its best.

  • Interior condition:

The seats, doors, and side panels are newly made and in very good condition. The floor mats are also new. The steering wheel and instrumentation have been upgraded, but otherwise it is in a nice original condition. New safety switches for electricity have been installed. The owner has also had headrests made for safety.

  • Exterior condition:

  • General condition:

This classic car is fittingly described as a "wolf in sheep's clothing," as on the one hand it is a small, cute and immensely popular candy from the 1950s that brings smiles to people's faces. On the other hand, it has speed and a motor sound that raises hairs on the back of your neck and tenses your jaw muscles. Can it get any more fun than this...?

Facts about the model

The first generation of the Fiat 500, which was produced between 1936-1956, is well known as the Topolino. In the mid-1950s, Fiat developed the successor, which had a similar construction as the 600 model that was introduced in 1955. It had individual wheel suspension, a self-supporting body and a rear-mounted engine. A few years later, in 1957, it was time for the smaller version, which competed with the microcars and motorcycles/scooters that were popular at the time. The designer was Dante Giacosa. When the 600 had a water-cooled rear engine with four cylinders, this one had two cylinders and air cooling. The first cars had 13.5 horsepower and went on sale in the summer of 1957. Relatively soon after, an upgraded version was released in the fall of 1957, called the Normale, which got, among other things, opening side windows, a proper rear seat, and a power output of 15 horsepower. The original version was then called the Economica. For the 1958 model year, a Sport version with 21 horsepower was introduced. Over the years, changes and updates were made, and in 1975 the era of the 500 came to an end (for the time being), with the Fiat 126 taking over the stage. Later, Fiat brought back the 500 concept, and the new version is still being manufactured today, but it is far from the simple and robust little car it was in the late 1950s.
