Volkswagen Golf I cabriolet 1,8 — 1986

A high-mileage example in surprisingly good condition relative to its mileage. Solid service history in the early years, along with an interesting re-registration after an exotic year abroad.

"A Swedish-sold convertible that quickly headed south for an initial, pleasant start to life in the sun on a controversial Mediterranean island."

Description

According to the register, NBO566 was first registered for use in Sweden on November 16, 1987. However, in the opening pages of the service booklet and in the warranty booklet, the same chassis number appears as a 1986 Golf Cabriolet with registration number MEE297, delivered on September 16, 1986, and receiving its first services in Nicosia, Cyprus (!) in July 1987.

From an M-test dated July 19, 1990—ordered by the new owner prior to purchase on August 7, 1990—the service book and history align with NBO566, with mileage and odometer readings consistent up to January 24, 1996, at 112,120 km. It is possible that authorities in the divided Cypriot capital required the car to be registered locally, and upon its return to Sweden in autumn 1987, MEE297 became NBO566 instead.

What happened from then until the available records today (June 2006) is unclear, but extracts from the registry were requested from both the National Archives and the Swedish Transport Agency. The latter responded that records may have been purged between 1994 and 2006, and that further information might be obtainable upon request. The process for this is described under “Owner’s comments.”

In any case, NBO566 is a pleasant and well-preserved high-mileage example, showing just under 330,000 km, with the most recent approved inspection carried out on May 3, 2024.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The engine, gearbox, chassis, and brakes feel as they should and all function well. The current owner has refurbished the cooling system, including fitting a new radiator. The front suspension has also been rebuilt.

To provide a clear overview of the service history, all documentation is included.

  • Interior condition:

Typical wear on entry and damage to the driver’s seat side bolster. The owner has temporarily stitched the fabric together to prevent further deterioration. A nice sport steering wheel has been fitted by the current owner; the original wheel is currently missing, but he is trying to locate it. A new infotainment unit with Apple CarPlay has been installed.

  • Exterior condition:

A presentable exterior with good paint and chrome. The plastic trim is in better condition than the mileage would suggest. There is a small blemish on the driver’s door at the seam with the lower frame.

The soft top is intact and clean, and operates smoothly and easily. Newer 17-inch BBS replica wheels are fitted with Kumho Ecsta tires from 2023. The original 14-inch wheels are included with worn budget tires—worth keeping, as someone may eventually want to return the car to its original stance.

  • General condition:

Good potential for open-air driving and sunshine, in a sensible and solid condition considering the mileage—all wrapped in a classic, proven, and well-loved youngtimer package.

Owner's comment

The Swedish Transport Agency responds regarding vehicle NBO566: Information about previous owners of the vehicle is not available in the road traffic register, as such data has been purged. Details of a previous owner are to be removed from the register five years after being recorded. However, this only applies once there have been more than three owners. Information about previous owners (from 1995 onwards) may exist in archived records showing transactions carried out in the road traffic register that have since been deleted. We cannot guarantee that the information fully corresponds to actual circumstances. These records do not contain names, only the relevant personal or organization numbers. If a registry extract consists of ten pages or more, we are required under the Fees Ordinance (1992:191) to charge a fee. The cost is SEK 50 for ten pages, plus SEK 2 per additional page, as well as postage. The fee will be invoiced. Please submit a new request if you accept the potential cost. Remember to state in your request that you approve dispatch in accordance with the Fees Ordinance, and specify the postal address to which the documents should be sent, as they are not sent by email. Also include billing details containing: Name Personal identity number/organization number Billing address Postal code and city Any reference for the recipient

Facts about the model

A convertible version of the Golf was presented to Volkswagen’s management as early as 1976 by coachbuilder Wilhelm Karmann. This early prototype lacked the reinforcing roll bar of the later production model and had a flatter rear body line, where the soft top folded down.

The production version of the convertible was designated Type 155. In Europe and Canada it was called the Golf Cabriolet, while in the United States it was sold as the Rabbit Convertible up to the 1985 model year. When the Rabbit was replaced by the Golf II in the U.S., the Mk1 cabriolet was renamed the “Volkswagen Cabriolet.”

The body was reinforced and featured a transverse roll bar, which was also crucial for structural rigidity. Final assembly of the Mk1 cabriolet was carried out entirely at Karmann’s factory, with Volkswagen supplying engines, suspension, and interior components. The soft top was available in vinyl or fabric and was insulated, with a heated glass rear window. It was manually operated until 1991, when an electric mechanism was introduced.

The cabriolet was produced between 1980 and 1994, and only with the introduction of the Golf Mk3 did a new version appear. In total, 388,522 units of the Golf Mk1 Cabriolet were built, making it the best-selling convertible of its time.
