"Whether you chose a coupé or a convertible, the new XK8 offered a comfortable grand tourer and a true long-distance cruiser. A pleasant V8 rumbled softly up front, while the cabin provided a refined, premium feel.

Some 30 years later, these cars are still driven with dignity and a distinctly British, stoic calm. This example is no exception. There are a few details to attend to, but the overall condition is good and the color combination is appealing."

Description

This car was first registered in Germany on March 6, 1997, to a company in Berlin. Already on August 6, 1998, it was registered for use in Sweden; shortly before that, a service had been carried out in Germany at 7,560 km on the odometer.

The current owner acquired the car in August 2024. Prior to that, it had three owners and covered approximately 40,000 km over a little more than 20 years. When he took ownership, new Michelin tires were fitted. A service was also carried out, including a new circuit board in the control unit, replacement of ignition coils and spark plugs, as well as new filters and oil. These and earlier service measures are documented in the original service booklet that accompanies the car. It also shows that the important replacement of the timing chain tensioners and water pump was carried out at 50,970 km in December 2018. The current mileage is 86,430 km.

The car comes with original owner’s manuals in Swedish, as well as the service booklet from when the car was new and the radio code. Various inspection reports verifying the mileage and receipts are also included. Two keys with remote fobs for a functioning alarm system are provided. A good set of winter tires—Dunlop Sport Winter—on original 17-inch wheels with center caps is also included, along with a protective cover (“top cover”).

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts easily, has a new battery, and the engine runs smoothly and quietly. During a short test drive on small roads in an archipelago setting, as well as a few kilometers on minor paved country roads, the car felt tight, and functions such as steering, road holding, the automatic gearbox with working kick-down, and the brakes all performed well.

Not inspected on a lift, but from what could be seen everything looked good, and there have been no remarks from vehicle inspections.

The convertible mechanism requires some attention; a fault means that when lowering the top, it needs to be helped manually for the first few decimeters before operating as intended—reverse procedure when closing.

  • Interior condition:

A fine original interior in Cream, with well-preserved leather in original condition. The seats offer good comfort. The steering wheel, controls, gauges, and dashboard are all in very good condition. Beautifully preserved walnut wood trim.

All electrical functions and instruments work, as does the air conditioning, which has recently been serviced and cools effectively. The period-correct Harman/Kardon audio system—with radio and cassette—works well, though there is some crackling from one speaker. A six-disc CD changer is located in the trunk.

Matching black textile protective covers for the front seats are included, along with rubber floor mats. A detailing would further enhance the overall presentation.

  • Exterior condition:

The paint in Antigua Blue Metallic appears to be original and is in good condition considering its age and mileage, with normal signs of use. Ditech treated. There is a small door ding or similar above the left rear wheel arch. Glass, trim, badges, and lighting details are in comparable condition. After a pressure wash the day before, some condensation appeared in the headlights, which should clear after some driving.

The engine bay and trunk are in good condition. The wheels—aftermarket 18-inch—are in good shape, with some scuffing on the right rear. A couple of center caps are missing. The car is fitted with newer Michelin Primacy 4 tires. The soft top is in good condition and watertight. A detailing, including an engine bay clean, would further improve the overall presentation.

  • General condition:

A car that feels fast and full of motion, even when standing still. The open version is a fine cruiser, remaining comfortable even at highway speeds. With this model, Jaguar returned to its British sports car roots after a period of looking across the Atlantic.

The model, color combination, and condition now make this 30-year-old an appealing classic and enthusiast’s car.

Facts about the model

The XK8 model succeeded the XJ-S, which had been produced for more than 20 years. The new model was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 1996 and was produced from 1996 to 2005 as the first generation. It was a thoroughly modern and updated car compared to its predecessor and shared its platform with the Aston Martin DB7. At the same time, its design paid homage to the iconic E-Type.

The engines were V8s paired with five- and six-speed automatic transmissions. Up to the 2002 model year, the cars were equipped with 4.0-liter fuel-injected engines, capable of 0–100 km/h in 6.7 seconds and a top speed of 250 km/h (limited). The interior, with leather upholstery, thick carpets, and wood trim, provided a cozy and exclusive feel.

Just over 90,000 units were produced, of which around 72,000 featured the original 4.0-liter version.
