"This car is a beautifully preserved classic from the Swedish “folkhem” era in DL trim—not only has it survived, but it remains in excellent condition with a true sense of originality throughout. As is often the case with classic Volvos that have had few owners, known history, and careful use—you’ll find the binder filled with receipts and documentation. In addition, there’s a wealth of interesting and useful literature included.

A true pleasure to inspect and drive."

Description

This car was sold new by Värmlands Motor AB to its first owner on May 24, 1978. He owned and drove the car until April 4, 2018, by which time it had covered just over 145,000 km. The second owner kept it for a short period before the current owner acquired it on September 22, 2018.

Throughout its life, the car has been stored indoors, with no cracks or sun damage to the dashboard or other plastic components. The car retains its original paint, except for a few panels and minor repairs in the rear wheel wells. All work has been carried out by authorized and professional body and paint specialists.

The current owner is a devoted Volvo enthusiast and has driven approximately 10,000 km with the car. In addition to regular maintenance and care, he has replaced all belts, including the timing belt and water pump. All fluids have been changed—brake fluid, coolant, engine oil, gearbox oil, and differential oil. Ten new suspension bushings in both the front and rear have been fitted, along with new rear dampers and springs. The exhaust system has been replaced with stainless steel pipes and mufflers throughout. New brake discs and pads all around. An electronic ignition system has been installed. The battery, tires (including the spare), and windshield are all new.

Receipts are available for all work, and the workshops used were carefully selected. Included with the car is a wealth of original Volvo literature from the era, along with all original manuals and service booklets. Sales brochures and other period materials are also included, as well as a small stock of useful new spare parts. Comes with two sets of keys. The car is inspected and ready to drive.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts easily and runs smoothly and quietly through the engine and drivetrain. During a test drive in a residential area and on country roads, everything functioned as it should. Steering, handling, clutch, gear changes, brakes, and more all felt calm and stable. It’s almost surreal to realize you’re driving a car that’s nearly 50 years old.

The car has not been inspected on a lift, but everything visible appeared to be in good condition, and it has received thorough rust protection over the years.

  • Interior condition:

Interior in original condition with a near-new feel. It has been fitted with custom-made Volvo seat covers, likely since new. One seat cover was carefully removed for photography, and along with a few earlier photos, it suggests that the original upholstery is in excellent condition.

The seats and rear bench retain their firmness. Door panels, interior trim, and textile mats are in impeccable condition—as are the headliner, dashboard, steering wheel, and controls.

The car has never had a radio installed. The current owner has fitted a correct period accessory tachometer. All electrical systems and functions operate as they should.

Fitted with molded protective mats, Volvo original.

  • Exterior condition:

Glossy and well-maintained paintwork with no dents or scratches—only a few minimal stone chips. Most of the paint is original. Chrome, glass, trim, emblems, rubber, plastic, and lighting details are all in excellent condition.

The wheels have been powder-coated and are fitted with newer Hankook tires and clean hubcaps. Both the engine bay and trunk are in impeccable condition, showing only light and tasteful signs of use.

  • General condition:

This is a classic from Sweden’s folkhem era and a historically significant enthusiast and collector vehicle—once again proving that the combination of the right ownership, solid history, and Volvo’s renowned quality is more than just a slogan.

    Volvo’s value truly lasts.

Owner's comment

– I spent several years searching for a 1978 model in the right condition and with the right history—it's the last year the standard models of Volvo’s 240 series featured the desirable round headlights. Over the summers, it has been to classic car meets and taken on the occasional longer trip just for fun. I've never had to worry about being stranded by the roadside. Now, with a growing family, it’s time to switch to a Volvo estate of a slightly newer vintage—still for enthusiast driving and leisure trips.

Facts about the model

The Volvo 240 was introduced in August 1974 as an update to the 140 series, designed by Jan Wilsgaard. The model has since become a true icon embedded in the Swedish national identity. Whether it was the ride home from the maternity ward in a taxi, trips to IKEA with your parents, or countryside visits with your grandparents—almost everyone in Sweden has some connection to these cars.

The front-end design of the 240 was partly inspired by the safety prototype VESC. In its first year, the model was offered with three different engines: B20A, B21A, and B21E. Trim levels included L, DL, GL, and GLE, with the latter two offered only as four-door versions and the only ones equipped with the B21E engine.

Over the years, the Swedish car market shifted from favoring two-door cars to preferring four-door versions, and the 240 evolved accordingly. Numerous variants and updates were introduced during its production run. When the new 740 model arrived in 1984, many assumed the "old" 240 had run its course—but Volvo doubled down and continued refining the 240.

Over time, a range of engines were introduced—including petrol, diesel, and turbocharged versions. The 240 was built in two-, four-, and five-door body styles. While there were versions aimed at sport and luxury, perhaps the most genuine representation of the Swedish folkhem spirit was found in the DL and GL models.

There were sportier cars on the market, but few could rival the Volvo 240's unique blend of simplicity, durability, quality, and safety—a true down-to-earth family car. More than 2.8 million Volvo 240s were produced between 1974 and 1993, and today, the once-ordinary people's car is a sought-after classic and enthusiast vehicle as it approaches its 50th anniversary.
