Volkswagen 1303 LS Cabriolet 1600 — 1973

Privately imported new in 1972, same owner family since then, and just under 120,000 km. Well-documented with a nice history. Updated info: The car was inspected on 2025-04-02 with a remark on the brakes right front, it's slightly stuck. Easy fix. The report is included in the pictures.

"Whether you choose to do some cosmetic paint touch-ups or simply drive it as it is, the driving pleasure with the roof and all the windows down is equally great."

Description

It was registered in the then brand-new computerized vehicle registry with its first owner in December 1972. Whether it was delivered by a Swedish dealer or privately imported as new is not confirmed, but according to the grandchildren of the first owner, "grandma and grandpa spent a lot of time in what was then West Germany." A German-language owner’s manual and an interim license from the Police Authority with a handwritten note stating "Imported from West Germany 17.11.72" support the latter—that grandma and grandpa privately imported the car at the same time the new vehicle registry was introduced.

A charming piece of documentation includes the car’s first paper road tax receipt, marking the transition to the new reflective foil sticker that was placed in the center of the rear license plate. The current odometer reading shows 18,265 km, which equates to 118,265 km (just under 120,000 km), as the meter has rolled over once. The most recent vehicle inspection was carried out on July 7, 2017. The car was passed down to the daughter and is now inherited by the grandchildren, who have chosen to sell it at auction for transparency and to ensure a fair market price.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The car has received a minor start-up service, including a check of the spark plugs, contact points, carburetor, fuel pump, and fresh fuel. The engine and gearbox feel solid, but a full service is recommended, as the car has been off the road since 2018.

  • Interior condition:

Good interior with normal wear, including a small crack on the upper edge of the dashboard. The driver’s side floor has previously had some standing water, resulting in surface rust, including on the seat rails, which made length adjustment difficult. These have now been cleaned and lubricated for improved function. The soft top headliner is in good condition.

  • Exterior condition:

A true orange shade that was actually also a period-correct Porsche color—Signal Orange L20E. The fenders, or at least the rear ones, have been repainted. The left rear shows some spray filler bubbles. The right front fender has a touched-up stripe and a few small sanded spots, and the front hood is polished through at the center crease.

The underside is clean and fresh with a black-painted chassis. The soft top is nicer than the original, featuring Sonnenland fabric, and the outer material feels new. Hankook Optimo tires manufactured in 2009 with good tread on original wheels. Nice original license plates, including a two-line rear plate from the car’s first registration in 1972.

  • General condition:

One-owner family, solid history, and a largely untouched, well-preserved original condition. Ready to drive, featuring a period-correct and, for many, an attractive color.

Facts about the model

The Volkswagen Type 1 Cabriolet was introduced as early as 1948 and remained in production until 1980, with the final years dedicated exclusively to the American market. Most were hand-built under license for Volkswagen by Karmann in Osnabrück. The 1303 was the most expensive German-built VW model and was discontinued in 1975, though the cabriolet version continued production until 1980.
