"A pleasant Saab to use and enjoy. The car is well-maintained and taken care of, and most of it is in nice original condition."

Description

It's often said that a car model is never as good as in its final years. Everything has been tested and calibrated. Here is a fine representative from the era of Saab 900, from the end of the first generation of the model series. Here, you get a classic model with good equipment, in nice original condition. It has, among other things, front seats from the new 9000 model, anti-lock brakes, central locking, and in this example, a comfortable automatic transmission. Additionally, it's equipped with Alu wheels of the Aero type, in very nice condition.

The car has low mileage and few owners. The previous owner, a Saab enthusiast, has done various work on the car, such as: repairing rust under the driver's door, welding, base paint, and surface paint. They have also installed new wheelhouse lists and new headlights. The control arms are rust-protected with Tectyl. New lower ball joints - Saab original. NOS steering wheel installed.

The car has a newer stereo system installed, but it also comes with a period-correct cassette radio and Saab's original speakers, new in boxes, as well as a new power antenna. Instruction and service booklets, as well as various inspection documents and receipts, are also included.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

It starts easily and runs smoothly, but there is a hint of ticking sound, perhaps a lifter issue? The automatic transmission shifts as it should during a short test drive at a calm pace.

From a superficial inspection, there seems to be no signs of rust underneath the car. Otherwise, it functions as it should and feels stable and agile. As with any enthusiast car that hasn't been driven regularly, a check-up and service are recommended.

  • Interior condition:

The interior is nice and pleasant in original condition, where seats, rear seat, door panels, carpets, and dashboard are in impeccable condition. NOS steering wheel. All controls, etc. seem to work as they should. Then there's the headliner, which, in the well-known Saab manner, has come loose but is fixed with "staples". Of course, not optimal but still functional. There is also wear on both sides of the tailgate at the C-pillars. The trunk is in nice condition with original tools and interior.

  • Exterior condition:

The paintwork seems to be original and looks good, but it could be polished to an even better shine. There are minor stone chips, a scratch, and a small dent on the tailgate. The glass and rubber details are in good condition, as are the wheels and tires - classic high profile and year-round type.

There are small areas, such as at the driver's side door opening, that need to be addressed.

  • General condition:

Just a little while ago, it was a common car on our roads, but now it's quickly disappearing. Those that have survived in good condition are slowly but surely transitioning from being a daily driver to an enthusiast car. A classic in the making, which in this case, is largely in nice original condition with details to improve. It's time to seize the opportunity and make the purchase.

Facts about the model

Saab struggled but still sold relatively well during the 1970s. The models were starting to show their age, especially the 96. So in May 1978, the new model 900 was introduced, which was a further development of the 99 but with a completely different aura. The stretched body made it feel different and found many new buyers worldwide. During the model years 1979-1993 (Generation 1), it was produced in a variety of versions with 2-, 3-, 4-, and 5-door bodies. A total of 908,817 were produced, ranging from flashy convertibles to practical family cars with plenty of space. During these years, Saab offered a wealth of technical innovations and unique solutions, which often became a statement and gave an image to the buyers. Saab drivers were not mainstream people; they were Saab people. Over all of this floated a turbo spirit. It was an impressive feat by a small manufacturer in the cold north.

Towards the end of this era, for the 1989 model year, a version of the 2.0-liter engine with 16 valves and no turbo, the 900i, was introduced. It produced 128 or 130 horsepower with or without a catalytic converter. For the 1991 model year, Saab launched an upgraded 2.1-liter engine with 16 valves producing 140 horsepower in some markets outside of Scandinavia. The following year, that engine was also sold in Sweden, and ABS brakes and central locking became standard.

The year after, in 1993, the new 900 was introduced, known as the New Generation and developed under GM on a platform from the Opel Vectra, but that's a completely different story.
