Volvo 164E B30E — 1975

Volvo’s top model in the seventies, generally well-maintained, unrestored condition. In its final year, the 164 was only sold in the USA, and this car has been driven in Southern California, which is why it has very little rust. Well used car.

Description

This car was manufactured in Kalmar in the fall of 1975 and sold new in San Diego, USA, as a 1976 model. It returned to Sweden 12 years ago and was registered 10 years ago. It has been driven very little in Sweden and was stored for a few years. Now it has been brought out and inspected, receiving approval for life.

The body and interior are in unrestored original condition. The car received a new paint job approximately 15 years ago. It has never been rust-repaired, and the body is in very good condition, thanks to having been driven in a dry climate. It has traveled 200,000 miles, equivalent to 33,000 kilometers. According to the previous owner in the USA, the engine was reportedly rebuilt at 120,000 miles, but we lack documentation for this. The car runs very well. A service may be in order, as it was last serviced 10 years ago, but it has only been driven a few hundred kilometers since then.

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts easily and runs well. The automatic transmission shifts normally. The brakes are in good condition. The AC is not functioning. It has been newly inspected by the vehicle inspection authority without any remarks.

  • Interior condition:

The original interior shows some wear. A detailing and upholstery cleaning would enhance the overall impression. There are hairline cracks on the dashboard—see the picture. The front power windows are functional.

  • Exterior condition:

The exterior is intact and in good condition. There are no rust issues and no noticeable scratches or scuffs. There is a small black paint chip on the top of the left front fender (see picture). The areas under the doors, in the fender edges, and the sills are all in great shape. It has never been in an accident. The underside is very nice. However, a grille around the front air intake is missing.

  • General condition:

An intact and good car in normal usable condition. Both exterior and interior detailing are needed to make it truly shine. There are no significant issues. It’s pleasant to drive.

Facts about the model

Volvo’s top model, the Volvo 164, was introduced in 1968 as Volvo’s finest and most exclusive car, featuring a 6-cylinder engine producing 130 hp. From 1972, a fuel-injected version with 160 hp was also available (140hp in USA). The car offered more luxurious seats and interior, along with a more elegant and longer front end. It sold well in the important US market, and when it was set to be replaced by the new Volvo 264 with a V6 engine in the fall of 1974, several dealers in the southern US chose to order an additional 2,000 164E cars, built exclusively for the US market. These cars featured the 240’s transmission, dashboard, seats, insulation, fuel filler cap, and special 5.5-inch wheels. Most were equipped with an automatic transmission and a sunroof.

Today, these cars are highly sought-after collectibles, particularly because they have been driven in dry climates. If you like Volvo, this is a rare opportunity to purchase an unusual and very appealing Volvo classic.
