DAF 66 Sedan (variomatic) 1.1 — 1973

The Daf 66 comes from an era when green was truly beautiful. The car was delivered in this color in 1973, and even then, people marveled at its vibrant hue. It’s a car that is cool in every sense of the word.

"When you pick up speed, the car sounds like a low-flying jet, which is perfectly normal—it’s how they were meant to sound. The more you accelerate, the more speed and noise you get. It needs a polish and some touch-ups on scratches to look even better, but otherwise, it’s ready to drive."

Description

What’s special about this car is its continuously variable Variomatic transmission, which operates completely automatically with its centrifugal clutch and belt drive in perfect harmony. Pushing the lever forward makes the car go forward, while pulling it back sends it in reverse, actually at the same speed. It’s a fun and quirky vehicle that quickly earned the nickname “Remjohan” among the Swedish public.

This DAF 66 was sold new in 1973 by Värmlands Bilförsäljning in Kristinehamn AB. Since then, it has had 9 owners from Värmland. The current owner bought the car at auction in 2022 and has since gone through the brakes, installed new tires, and had it inspected by the vehicle inspection authority. As the car has turned 50, it is now exempt from both taxes and inspections under Swedish vintage car regulations. The odometer reads 67,360 kilometers, and since these meters roll over at 100,000 kilometers, the mileage could be 167,360 kilometers.

We recommend a minor service and maintenance for the car, including replacing the wiper blades, which is advisable during the service. The owner has just obtained a motorcycle license and plans to buy a vintage motorcycle, so he is now letting his DAF 66 go on to the next enthusiast.

The car comes with an owner’s manual, a spare wheel, a jack, and a documentation folder detailing the car’s history.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

With full choke during a cold start, the engine starts up nicely. It can be a bit stubborn if not warmed up before driving, just like all older vehicles from the pre-electronic injection era. There isn’t much electronics here to go wrong. The car is equipped with a 1.1-liter four-cylinder carbureted inline engine producing 47 hp and a Variomatic automatic transmission.

The idle is slightly high, which is noticeable when engaging the gear, leading to a bit of grinding noise. It will be necessary to add hose clamps to the fuel lines at the fuel pump in the engine compartment—see pictures.

  • Interior condition:

The dashboard is intact and in good condition, with nice door panels and headliner. The fabric on the front seats shows some wear on the backrests and is sun-faded at the top of the rear seat—see the pictures. The car is equipped with a period-appropriate working Blaupunkt car radio.

  • Exterior condition:

The dashboard is intact and in good condition, with nice door panels and headliner. The fabric on the front seats shows some wear on the backrests and is sun-faded at the top of the rear seat—see the pictures. The car is equipped with a period-appropriate working Blaupunkt car radio.

  • General condition:

A cool and quirky car that is the ancestor of Volvo’s small cars. It has its quirks, with a few scratches and dents, which can be seen as age rings showing that the car has been enjoyed rather than just sitting in a garage. Overall, it’s in good condition considering its age.

Facts about the model

It was this car that prompted Volvo to invest in small cars. They were so impressed that they acquired the entire DAF company in 1975. The model was sold as the Volvo 66 starting in 1975.

DAF stands for Van Doorne’s Automobielfabriek. The DAF 66 is a Dutch rear-wheel-drive passenger car that was produced by DAF from 1972 to 1976. The model is most noted for its continuously variable transmission with belt drive, known as Variomatic, which earned it the nickname “Remjohan” in Sweden following Volvo’s acquisition of DAF. The DAF 66 was a lightweight car, weighing under 1,000 kg. With its 1.1-liter Renault-engineered engine producing 47 hp and the Variomatic automatic transmission, it could accelerate from a standstill to 100 km/h in just 23.8 seconds, with a top speed of 137 km/h.

From the 1976 model year, the name was changed to Volvo 66, and the car was produced with minor modifications until 1980. It was succeeded by the Volvo 340, which was also a design inherited from DAF.
