Volvo 850 2.5SE — 1995

Without doubt the lowest-mileage example for sale in the world, showing just 265 kilometers. A true time capsule, with only three owners: 29 years with the first, followed by two Volvo enthusiasts.

"Always amazing that such low-mileage cars still exist—thanks to a somewhat paranoid first owner."

Description

This Volvo 850 2.5 SE was sold new by Volvo dealer Bilorama to Mr. Johansson of Sölvesborg. He owned the car for 29 years until his passing, after which it was sold through his estate in 2024 to a Volvo collector in Vetlanda. The current enthusiast purchased it earlier this year. Nobody knows when the car was last properly driven, so essential work has been carried out: the cambelt, water pump, and fuel pump have been replaced, and the brakes reviewed—making it ready to drive without issues. On my short 1 km test drive, everything functioned exactly as it should.

Now for the remarkable backstory: Mr. Johansson was financially comfortable but never liked to flaunt his wealth, preferring to drive his old Amazon Estate. In 1995, he decided to treat himself to a brand-new Volvo 850 with the five-cylinder engine. Delivered with 125 km on the odometer, he added just 140 km before a neighbor stopped him in the village and remarked, “Wow, you bought a new car?” In a moment of panic, he denied it and claimed he had won it in a lottery. Embarrassed, he drove the car home, parked it in his garage—and there it remained ever since. The car comes with complete Volvo paperwork and even the original promotional video cassette. Remarkably, the service book has never received a stamp.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

As a safety measure, the cambelt, water pump, and fuel pump have been replaced, with the original parts retained (see pictures). On a short test drive, the engine ran smoothly, the gearbox shifted as it should, and the brakes worked properly. All electrics are functional, and the wheels are fitted with the original tires, which still hold air with the valves replaced. A small hole is noted in the engine cover fabric under the bonnet.

  • Interior condition:

Interior has hardly ever been used and remains undamaged, though after 30 years it shows some light sun fading on the rear parcel shelf, the tops of the rear seat, the left passenger seat cushion, and slightly on the driver’s seat cushion (see pictures). Additional minor details include some creasing of the vinyl on the driver’s door handle and a mark around the passenger door handle (see pictures).

  • Exterior condition:

Bodywork is straight with no damaged panels, with only a small 4 cm paint blister on the top edge of the rear right passenger door (see picture). Chrome roof trims and the rear window rubber seal show typical age-related dulling. Overall, the paintwork is sound, though the clearcoat has lifted on the bonnet, roof, and bootlid—likely from an aggressive jet wash during the estate sale, or simply age-related deterioration. The paint beneath appears fine, and the car would present excellently with a new clearcoat. The underbody is clean and solid, showing only minor surface rust on some components.

  • General condition:

With its extraordinary mileage, this car is already a true collector’s item—destined either for a serious collection or a museum. You will not find another example with mileage this low unless you visit the Volvo Museum/World of Volvo itself.
