"A practical sports car with a pleasant sound from the V4 engine. A red car always brightens up, even in the worst gray weather."

Description

The Sonett, nicknamed "The Mistress," was the owner's (estate's) first car. He bought it in March 1983 and was its fourth owner at the time. This was before he met his wife. She recalls that he disassembled it down to the smallest component and thoroughly inspected and/or renovated each part. When he bought it, the car was yellow, and he later had it repainted in its current red color. In the early years, he drove it year-round and even took it on a couple of long vacations in Europe. After a few years, it became a "second car" and was mostly used for shorter, but occasionally longer, trips and leisure drives. Over the years, he did a lot of work on it, but unfortunately, the estate doesn't know exactly what. However, he did replace the transmission a few years ago, so it now has a floor shifter. He also replaced the old seat belts with retractable ones and equipped it with stiffer suspension. The last trip the couple made was for the Sonett Club's annual meeting last spring. They drove 1,170 kilometers around Lake Vänern, and the car handled it brilliantly. The last owner did not use the car for driving on gravel roads or in bad weather.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The engine and drivetrain run well. The brakes are effective and even, though slightly stiff to press. The engine is 1700 cc, equipped with a Saab 7:2 camshaft and a Weber 36/36 DCD carburetor. According to reports, the engine develops around 90 hp. The car features Saab Ronal rims (5Jx15) fitted with Yokohama S Drive tires with good tread depth. It has stiffer suspension and a new exhaust system.

  • Interior condition:

The interior is in good condition. The seats are reupholstered in cognac-colored leather and have a few small damages (see pictures). The door panels, headliner, and floor mats are in good, used condition with signs of use (see pictures). The instrument panel is in fine condition.

  • Exterior condition:

Older repaint in normal and acceptable condition with some signs of age and use (see pictures). The rubber strip on the right side of the front bumper sticks out slightly but can probably be easily fixed.

  • General condition:

The car gives an honest and good impression. It is in a usable condition and ready for new adventures.

Facts about the model

The Saab Sonett was introduced in 1956 and developed through several versions until the model was discontinued in 1974. The Sonett II was presented in 1966, with the fiberglass bodies manufactured at ASJ in Arlöv, Skåne. In 1966, only 28 cars were produced, with an additional 230 made in 1967. When Saab began using V4 engines in their vehicles, licensed from Ford, the Sonett was also equipped with the V4 engine, necessitating a redesign of the hood to accommodate it. A total of 1,868 units of the Sonett II, including the V4 version, were produced. New features for the 1968 model year included a Sonett V4 emblem on the hood, rubber bumper guards on the front, a black-painted instrument panel with a glove compartment, and wider rims.
