Mercedes-Benz 280 S W116 — 1975

To avoid any immediate confusion: the trunk badge reads 280 SE, but this is in fact a 280 S — a W116 S-Class equipped with a carbureted engine producing 160 hp, and nothing else. Swedish-sold with 23 owners over its lifetime and just over 290,000 km on the clock, it remains in a roadworthy and user-friendly condition.

"Comfortable in today’s traffic — a luxury car of its time with a charming, patinated character."

Description

It was first registered for road use in Sweden and delivered to its first owner in March 1976. According to its history, it once belonged to a chairman of the Mercedes Club. The current owner hasn’t had it for long and is including a spare parts car along with a large collection of extra parts. The most recent (and final) approved inspection was carried out on October 9, 2023, when the car entered its inspection-exempt period as it turned 50 years old — that is, in 2025.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts easily, and the gearbox shifts properly. The engine idles a bit high, and the valves produce a noticeable tick — addressing these two issues would certainly soothe the ears of any mechanically sensitive driver. Otherwise, the brakes and chassis feel solid.

  • Interior condition:

Refurbished and re-dyed black leather interior, intact and in good condition. The car appears to have been originally equipped with air conditioning, with the control unit still present in the center of the dashboard, but the compressor is missing from the engine bay. The headliner is slightly soiled but intact and likely easy to clean. The wood trim looks good, with only a few cracks, mainly on the center console.

  • Exterior condition:

Presentable exterior with a more recent repaint. According to previous information, the sills have been welded in the past, though there’s a rust spot at the front end of the left sill that would likely draw some attention during an inspection. The electric sunroof works well and seals properly. Classic 14" “baroque” wheels with some patina and scuff marks, but they look good from a distance. Older Kumho tires with good tread and hand-painted white stripes. Why the “280 SE” badge has been fitted to a carbureted (280 S) car remains unclear in the car’s history. Nice touch with the original 1970s Swedish license plates.

  • General condition:

Well-used S-Class in attractive, enthusiast-driven condition. Roadworthy and recently inspected.

Facts about the model

Led by designer Friedrich Geiger, Mercedes began work on its 1970s S-Class already in the mid-1960s. When the Paris Motor Show opened in the autumn of 1972, it was finally time — the new S-Class, the W116, was unveiled.

The range spanned from the entry-level 280 S/SE with a six-cylinder engine featuring dual overhead camshafts — available with either a carburetor or fuel injection — all the way up to the mighty 6.9-liter V8. Manual or automatic transmissions were offered, with the six-cylinder models using a four-speed box. Interiors came in several options: fabric, velour, or leather.

As always, Mercedes placed great emphasis on safety, and the W116 was an exceptionally safe car for its time. The 280 SE’s fuel injection initially used the D-Jetronic system but was soon replaced by the simpler K-Jetronic.

The W116 was produced until 1980, with a total of 473,035 units built. Of these, just over 1,300 remain registered in Sweden today.
