"A beautiful 1930s car in a lovely and genuine condition."

Description

Buick Model 46 from 1940 belonged to Buick’s Special series, a popular model range in the brand’s lineup. The year 1940 was an important one for Buick, as they introduced a more streamlined design, featuring more modern and aerodynamic shapes, giving the cars a distinctive and elegant appearance. This particular example has undergone a top-class restoration, with no expenses spared. Most parts are either new or restored. The engine and drivetrain have been refurbished, and the engine has even been fitted with new steel connecting rods of higher quality than those installed during wartime. The rear axle has been given a higher gear ratio to make the car easier to drive in today’s traffic. Other updates include the speedometer, windshield wipers, headlights, new windows all around, a new battery, a new power steering system from Cadillac, a new exhaust system, starter motor, and generator. The entire braking system has also been restored or replaced, including the brake lines. Much more has been addressed—too much to list here—but most of it is new or replaced. See pictures for details. The car also comes with extensive documentation in the form of receipts, a workshop manual, and a parts catalog. The odometer has likely rolled over once or twice.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Easy to start. The engine and drivetrain run very well. The straight-eight pulls smoothly from low revs without any issues. The brakes engage softly and evenly. The instruments on the dashboard work as they should, except for the fuel gauge, which has a mind of its own, and the clock, which has stopped.

  • Interior condition:

The interior is overall in very good condition. The headliner is nice and intact, and the floor mats are clean and complete.

  • Exterior condition:

Older repaint that maintains a good standard. There are a few paint chips and a small dent, see pictures. The driver’s door window has a long crack. Some of the chrome is in a slightly more worn condition, see pictures. The underside of the car is very clean, well-maintained, and thoroughly restored.

  • General condition:

A Buick from the wartime model year in very pleasant and well-restored condition.

Facts about the model

The Buick Model 46 is a two-door coupé, part of Buick’s smaller car family. It features a distinctly rounded body, a wide grille, and fenders that blend more seamlessly with the body compared to earlier models. The car’s front design is sleek, with the characteristic horizontal chrome bars in the grille, creating a sense of both luxury and modernity.

The Buick Model 46 is equipped with a straight eight-cylinder engine, renowned for its reliability and smooth performance, making Buick a popular choice for those seeking both power and comfort. This engine, combined with the car’s aerodynamic shape, provided strong performance for its time, and Buick also focused on making the cars more comfortable and easier to drive.

The Buick Special series, including the Model 46, was popular among the middle class of the era, offering a stylish and comfortable vehicle at a more reasonable price than the brand’s more expensive Roadmaster or Limited series. The 1940 model sold well and contributed to Buick’s success during the late 1930s and early 1940s.

In summary, the 1940 Buick Model 46 was a blend of innovation and tradition, with a design that reflected the stylistic ideals of the time and an engine that delivered both power and smoothness. Today, the model is appreciated by collectors for its period-typical design and historical significance.
