"These early Land Rovers are seldom seen on the road nowadays. This is a well-maintained example that needs a bit of attention before inspection. There do not appear to be any major issues with the vehicle; it starts, runs, and has been used on private property in recent years. This vehicle has not been test-driven on site by Bilweb Auctions."

Description

The Land Rover was purchased by the current owner as early as 1981. According to the vehicle register, he is the car’s second owner since new. Its condition clearly shows that it has been well cared for. Nothing has been abused or damaged, as can happen with more careless use. The engine was replaced with a newer Volvo B20 engine during the 1980s. The gearbox/transfer case also comes from the Volvo world—specifically from a Volvo Valp. For the buyer who values originality, the correct engine is included separately with the vehicle. However, the original gearbox is no longer present. The car is registered with the replacement engine, and this is recorded in the Swedish Transport Agency’s registry. The vehicle must be inspected before it is used on public roads. It has been off the road since the last inspection, which was carried out in 2011.

The following issues have been noted and require attention:
STEERING ARM (2.1.3) RIGHT MOUNTING LOOSE
PARKING BRAKE BRAKING EFFECT (1.4) INSUFFICIENT
CO LEVEL AT IDLE (8.2.1.2) TOO HIGH

The owner is now choosing to sell the vehicle due to age.
Included with the car are a spare wheel, the original engine, and one set of ignition keys.
This is a remote auction. The photos and information about the car and its technical condition have been provided by the owner. BWA has therefore not inspected the vehicle on site.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Fully operational mechanically. The engine has been replaced with a Volvo B20, with a stated output of 82 horsepower. The original engine is included separately. The gearbox/transfer case has also been replaced and comes from a Volvo Valp (the original gearbox/transfer case is missing). The radiator was refurbished two years ago, and a new clutch was installed at the same time. There is some oil moisture on the underside of the vehicle — see the photos. The brakes work but need an inspection and servicing before the vehicle inspection. We also recommend a general service, as the vehicle has been driven very little in recent years.

  • Interior condition:

Well-preserved on the inside with patinated wear. Most of it appears to be in original condition.

  • Exterior condition:

Older repaint; the paint surface is “rough” and in usable condition. There are a few small dents, but the body is overall unusually good and well-preserved considering the vehicle model and its age. See the photos.

The car previously had splash-guard wheel arch extensions installed; when these were removed, the traces of the rivets are now visible along the wheel arch edges. Original wheels with older tires.

  • General condition:

Unusually well-preserved, in a condition rarely seen on these utility vehicles, though with some technical updates. There are a few remarks that must be addressed before the inspection at the vehicle testing authority.

Facts about the model

In April 1948, the Land Rover was introduced—a robust working vehicle. Over the years it was offered with a variety of body styles, in both short and long versions. In 1958 the Series II arrived with a longer wheelbase, now 88 and 109 inches. By 1971 it was time for the Series III. Despite its aura of ruggedness, the vehicles became increasingly civilized over the years. This was especially true in 1983, when the Series III was phased out in favor of what a few years later became the new Defender. Reliable petrol and diesel engines, along with four-wheel drive, made the Land Rover in all its forms a highly appreciated utility vehicle.
