Cigarette 38 S.E. Cover Girl Kevlar 2 x V8 — 1986

This is a Flatdeck boat from the American manufacturer Cigarette, which was built as a project boat together with the boating magazine 'Boating'. This offshore boat, known as 'Covergirl', was built as a 'one-off' with a kevlar hull, Three Man Race Bolster, and Race Fairing with Flip Ups. It is equipped with dual Hawk V8 engines, each 540 cu/in. Now newly renovated and tuned to 675 hp each, it features Speedmaster #3 drives with Stand Off Boxes. This boat was a cover and project boat, as well as a test feature when new in the American boating magazine 'Boating' in November 1985. A lot of documentation is included.

"An extremely cool cult boat in very good condition with newly renovated engines. It's like the AC Cobra of the seas."

Description

This special "One off" boat from the American Cigarette factory was delivered on December 6, 1985, to a Swede, Jan Nordin, in Florida. According to a document from Marina Title Research Inc in Miami, USA, this boat was also owned by Hugh Hefner of Playboy Enterprises. This claim is not guaranteed, but the fax was sent in 1997, so it is not a recent invention. The boat was built as a project boat in the magazine 'Boating' in collaboration with the Cigarette factory. This model was built for racing without comfort-enhancing heavy interior. It has a hull made of Kevlar, unlike the cheaper and heavier boats made for high-speed leisure outings, which are made of fiberglass. At the stern, one can also notice that the drives are placed like those on racing boats. On American internet and Facebook sites, one can find inquiries about this Covergirl. For many years, it was lost from the sight of the general boating community. Eventually, it was rediscovered relatively untouched. A few years ago, it was imported to Sweden and underwent a refresh and repaint with a more modern look but with the same colors as the original, albeit reversed. Through some minor paint defects, one can see that the boat was primarily red, like the original from Cigarette advertisements and magazine images from 'Boating'. The current owner has had the two V8 engines renovated and tuned to 675 horsepower each by the well-reputed company Nilsén Performance outside Falun. According to the owner, these are likely the original engines for this boat.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The engines have been newly renovated at Nilsén Performance in Bjursås, outside Falun, Dalarna. The port reverse gear slips somewhat and needs to be looked at. The engines are tuned to 675 horsepower each. The temperature and oil pressure gauges are inconsistent.

The installation of the newly renovated engines is recent and they have not yet been properly tested in the water. Additional adjustments might be necessary for optimal performance.

  • Interior condition:

Very good condition. The instruments are not original. The cushions have been reupholstered. The interior has been upgraded and is not entirely in its original design.

  • Exterior condition:

The kevlar hull is in very good condition. There are a few minor paint defects which, in fact, reveal that the original color is red, which is the original color of the Covergirl. An additional panel, a 'sun deck', in the original red color is included. The one currently mounted on the boat features large air intakes.

  • General condition:

A boat in very good condition that requires some fine-tuning due to the newly renovated engines having been recently installed in the hull. The American trailer is included in the purchase.

Facts about the model

The boat is 36.7 feet (11.4 meters) long, with a breadth of 8 feet (2.4 meters) and a draft of 1.6 feet (0.5 meters). It is equipped with two V8 engines, each 540 cubic inches, producing approximately 675 horsepower each.

The Cigarette 38 won the World Offshore Championships in 1981 and the U.S National Offshore Championships in 1982.

This boat is covered in Doug Schrywer's "Anatomy Of A Sportboat," which includes details about its construction.

Among the images, there is a compilation/quote of the costs for the boat. The boat has had a life, albeit dormant for many years, and has thus undergone some changes since its construction, so this compilation does not describe the boat's current equipment.
