Ford Shelby GT350 351cui — 1969

Ultra-rare Ford Mustang Shelby GT350, one of approximately 195 convertibles ever built by Carroll Shelby. This car has been in the same family since it was imported to Sweden in 1973 and comes with full documentation and an impressive amount of original history.

"The car has been driven occasionally over the past six years, with a service completed in 2022 costing 30.000 SEK, primarily covering the brakes and an oil change. Recently, the carburetor was reviewed, and the automatic choke, which had been stuck and causing black smoke, was repaired. The car now runs well, though it does need proper warming up. A minor review is recommended since it hasn’t been driven much, but otherwise, the engine runs smoothly, the automatic gearbox shifts fine, and the brakes are solid. The steering is responsive, and road handling remains good and stable."

Description

Originally shipped to Hickey Ford Sales, Inc. in Troy, NY on June 9, 1969, this Shelby GT350 was later sold by Wolfgang F. Conzen to Walker Buerge Ford in California. The current owner, Mr. Löthman of Helsingborg, Sweden, purchased the car on June 11, 1971, with 13,353 miles for $2,418. After driving it from Los Angeles to New York, he arranged for shipment through Norway to Sweden.

To meet Swedish Transport Department requirements, Carroll Shelby himself had to write four letters verifying the axle and offset specifications, as these were unique to Shelby's modifications. With Shelby’s letters and the assistance of a lawyer, the car finally received approval and was registered in Sweden on April 5, 1974.

The car was stripped down to bare metal, meticulously repaired, and repainted in its original Ford color, Grabber Blue. Following the repaint, it was reassembled with a careful selection of original and NOS parts to preserve its authenticity. Detailed photos of the restoration process are available, highlighting the exceptional commitment to originality throughout.

The mileage was documented at 13,353 miles in 1971, 29,350 miles in 1973, and 60,621 miles in 1986. Currently, it reads 64,795 miles, meaning it has only been driven 4,174 miles since 1986. Numerous older inspection reports verify the mileage, providing a well-documented record of the car’s limited use over the years.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The car runs well but needs a few minutes to warm up properly before driving. The engine operates smoothly, and the engine bay is clean and well-maintained. An issue with the automatic choke previously caused excess fuel consumption and some soot buildup in the exhaust, but this has been resolved, and it now runs as expected. Given its limited use in recent years, a brief review is recommended. The car is permanently inspection-exempt and ready to drive away. It also features stylish alloy wheels with minor scratches and new tires fitted in 2022.

  • Interior condition:

Interior is complete, showing normal signs of age and wear. The seats are undamaged, with only a few marks that would benefit from a detailed cleaning. The dashboard and instrumentation are in good condition, with a working radio, although the fuel gauge is currently non-functional. The carpet and floor mats are well-kept, and the door panels are in good condition, though there is cracked plastic around the grab handle. The rear plastic panels on the seats show some scratches and a few paint spots (see pictures). The headliner of the convertible roof is in good shape, and the electric roof operates smoothly.

  • Exterior condition:

The car presents very well, with clean, straight bodywork and no damage. The underbody is tidy, showing some signs of older repair work in certain areas. The paintwork is clean and shiny, though it has a few minor imperfections: a small paint crack around one hood scoop, a touch-up on a scratch on the boot lid, and a paint crack on the driver’s door (see pictures). The center hood scoop is missing its mesh grille. The roof is complete and undamaged, with just one small mark (see pictures).

  • General condition:

This is one of the ultimate Mustangs you can own, a rare opportunity for any collector. Finding another Shelby GT350 convertible for sale could take years, as the GT350 is considerably less common than the GT500. This model stands out not only for its rarity but also for its unique blend of performance and classic Shelby style.

Facts about the model

In 1962, Carroll Shelby founded Shelby American and began producing Ford-powered sports and race cars. This collaboration led to the creation of the first Shelby Mustang in 1965. The GT350 was followed by the GT500 in 1967, but production of both models ended in 1969 when Shelby and Ford parted ways.

The 1969 Shelby Mustang was available in two body styles and two variations, offering a total of four basic configurations. The G.T. 350 featured a small-block V8 under the hood, typically the 351 Windsor engine rated at 290 horsepower, although some sources mention the 302 as the base engine. The G.T. 500 came with a larger 428-cu.in. FE-series big-block engine, which was the Cobra Jet version introduced in mid-1968, along with the "King of the Road" G.T. 500 KR model. The KR suffix was dropped for 1969, but the engine remained the same, still producing 335 horsepower.
