"One of the stylish American post-war cars with a big dollar grin."

Description

This De Soto was sold new in Sweden and is in nicely patinated condition with a 'gangster visor' that is green underneath, likely the car’s original color. The current owner's father found the car listed for sale many years ago in an ad he had saved in a box. He contacted the seller, who had owned the car for 16 years, to inquire if it was still available. It was, though stored away in a barn and no longer running. They agreed to meet. With only a picture from an old newspaper ad, the current owner and her father traveled over 300 kilometers to see the car and eventually purchase it. According to reports, the De Soto was used as a taxi in Mora when it was new.

The car has several paint chips, dents, and touch-ups, as shown in the photos. The current owner has kept the car in its close-to-original, patinated condition, choosing not to alter it with a restoration. The De Soto was used by the current owner during the first two years, but has become more stationary over time as family and life priorities have intervened. In 2020, the car received maintenance, including new engine oil, transmission oil, and rear axle oil. It also received a new fan belt, exhaust hangers, and a thorough lubrication. The rear axle leaks a bit of oil, so the owner has topped it up once per year. The De Soto is equipped with a tow hitch, but the wiring for it needs attention due to poor exhaust mounting.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The engine and drivetrain are working. The fluid transmission shifts well, but there's a bit of scraping when putting it in reverse. All technology and peripherals need to be checked, and some components are not functioning properly, such as the engine's temperature gauge and the car's cabin fan.

  • Interior condition:

The interior is in a patinated, somewhat dirty, and worn condition. The fabric for the hat rack is missing, and the rear seat fabric is torn, see pictures. There are also small holes and damages in the upholstery otherwise, see pictures. Foldable extra seats in the rear compartment.

  • Exterior condition:

Worn older paint. Paint damage, dents, scratches, cracking, and touch-ups, see pictures. Older, partially visible and by today's standards, poor welding, see pictures. Chrome work in worn condition.

  • General condition:

A car that should be considered a rolling renovation project with significant repair needs. The car is operational, but there is a lot to fix if one wishes to do so.

Facts about the model

The 1946 De Soto Custom SE is a classic American car model, a brand under Chrysler Corporation. After World War II, most American car manufacturers resumed production, but due to rationing and limited resources, they made few major changes to their pre-war models. This was also true for De Soto, which largely continued the development of its earlier models. The De Soto Custom SE is a full-size car known for its robust, heavy, and elegant design. The model is characterized by De Soto's signature grille with broad horizontal chrome bars and elegant details that give the car a luxurious appearance. Other distinctive features include the wide body, rounded fenders, round headlights, and many chrome accents that add to its 1940s style.

The model has a spacious and comfortable interior that seats seven passengers, making it ideal for families and long trips. The seats are upholstered in fabric and generously padded, and the interior is decorated with period wood and chrome details. The 1946 De Soto Custom SE is powered by a straight-six engine with 236 cubic inches (about 3.9 liters), generating approximately 109 horsepower. This reliable engine focuses more on smooth driving and stability than quick acceleration. The transmission is a three-speed manual "Fluid Drive," an innovative semi-automatic gearbox from the Chrysler group that makes driving smoother and easier.

Today, the De Soto Custom SE is a sought-after collector’s car and is considered a symbol of post-war optimism and American car culture.
