Piaggio Vespa GS 160 serie 1 Series 1 — 1963

Perhaps the most classic Vespa of the 1960s, with sporty ambitions from manufacturer Piaggio, presented here in a charming and well-preserved original condition, with only a few minor deviations from the original specification.

"A distinctive and smooth torque delivery from the engine, offering unusually strong pull for such a small two-stroke machine. Combined with its wide shape, "wasp waist," and relatively smooth ride, these qualities make the Vespa GS160 and its successor, the SS180, especially desirable."

Description

It was delivered in May 1963 to its first owner, Bertil Lundberg, who held the title of trainee, by Vespa dealer F:a Andersson & Ström in Borås. The scooter remained in southern Älvsborg, in P-län, until the early 1970s, around the time Sweden introduced the new computerized vehicle registry in 1972-73.

In 1974, the scooter made its way to the Gothenburg area, where it has remained ever since. The current owner acquired the Vespa in 2014, after it had spent an impressive 38 years with its previous caretaker.

Throughout its life, the Vespa has been ridden (and had long periods of inactivity) in western Sweden, with relatively few owners, who together have covered just over 6,500 km in total.

The scooter will be delivered freshly inspected.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The engine feels fresh and runs smoothly, having undergone an overhaul a few years ago, including new seals, bearings, honing, and rings.

Most recently, it has been upgraded with a Pinasco Flytech electronic ignition system, improving the scooter’s reliability.

Technically, at the time, only the Vespa Grand Sport 160 and its successor, the Super Sport 180, featured an engine with piston-controlled fuel intake. This design originally required a 5% oil mixture, but with a high-quality fully synthetic two-stroke oil, a lower mix ratio can be used today.

  • Interior condition:

Newly manufactured seat in original black design. There is some debate about whether it should be gray or dark blue, but according to reports, all GS160 models sold in Sweden originally came with a black seat.

  • Exterior condition:

Untouched and beautifully patinated original paint, except for the right side panel, which was repainted sometime in the 1970s.

Additionally, the brake drums are painted black, as is the small cover on the front fork, whereas they should be silver and stainless steel, respectively. This is an easy fix for the originality enthusiast.

Newer, high-quality tires with a more modern tread pattern.

  • General condition:

As sought-after as the sporty scooters from the 1960s are, and with its largely untouched original condition and solid history, this example is particularly appealing to the well-informed and discerning scooter enthusiast with a taste for manually shifted metal-bodied scooters.

Facts about the model

The Vespa Grand Sport 160 was a major step forward for Piaggio, replacing the 1950s-era GS150 design. While modernized, it still remained true to its original design philosophy.

Although this scooter, with its small rear glove compartment, is technically a Series 1 and could be classified internationally as a 1962 model, the first GS160 units in Sweden were officially sold as 1963 models by the importer.

Take note of the brochure images, featuring the enthusiastically upbeat yet highly detailed text from the Fram-King company’s Vespa division, Sweden’s official Vespa distributor at the time.

Trivia:
In the 1979 cult film Quadrophenia, which explores the Mod movement of 1964, centered around music, drugs, young love, and scooters, the artist Sting played a prominent role while riding a Vespa GS160.

The film sparked a revival of the classic scooter scene, bringing together a unique mix of subcultures that continue to thrive today. This includes Mods revivals, punks, and skinheads, all strongly influenced by 1960s Motown soul, followed by punk, ska, reggae, and the synth music of the 1980s.
