"An unusual classic on Swedish roads."

Description

This car is actually an Austin FX4, but the production of these "London taxis" was taken over by Carbodies in 1982. This particular vehicle is a 1983 model. It was purchased by its second owner while he was working as a doctor in Kuwait during the 1990s. According to reports, around ten of these taxis were manufactured and shipped to Kuwait in this somewhat unusual color in 1983.

When the doctor decided to move to Sweden, he brought the taxi with him. It was first inspected in Sweden in 1991 and most recently in 2016. The taxi appears to be in better condition than expected, apart from the rust under the vinyl roof. The intact wheel arches and door bottoms are promising signs. We don’t know if the odometer has rolled over, but judging by the car’s overall body condition, it may not have.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Not started due to a long period of inactivity at the time of photography. The technical condition cannot be assessed as the car was not started. The vehicle is equipped with AC.

  • Interior condition:

The interior is in a used but decent condition with signs of wear. The headliner is in good condition.

  • Exterior condition:

There are color variations in the paintwork. Some scratches, mainly on the left rear door but also elsewhere. There are also a few dents, primarily on the rear bumper. The car has largely been spared from rust, except under the vinyl roof where rust is present—see photos. The tires have dry cracks—see photos.

  • General condition:

A London taxi in need of an inspection and startup service. With some time and effort (primarily on the roof), it has the potential to become really nice. For a British car from the 1980s, it feels relatively solid.

Facts about the model

The London taxi – a British icon that remained nearly unchanged for decades.

The Austin FX4, as it was originally called, was introduced in 1958. In 1982, the coachbuilder Carbodies took over production, later forming LTI – London Taxi International – which continued building the London taxi until 1997.

This particular example arrived in Sweden in 1991 from Kuwait.
