"Original condition can only happen once. Here presented in a somewhat worn state."

Description

The lucky teenager who owned one of these must have been the king of the group. It had only recently become legal for moped manufacturers to replace pedals with the much more modern kickstarter as a means of starting the engine. The moped had evolved from a motorized bicycle into a simpler, slower version of a motorcycle—a major step forward in its development.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

According to the seller, it starts and runs. We did not test ride it at the time of photography.

  • Exterior condition:

A few dents and scuffs, along with some missing screws and bolts. This is exactly how a moped might have looked after several years of regular use.

  • General condition:

Weathered but well cared for. Starts and runs. Before taking it on any longer rides, it’s recommended to give it a proper service, as it has been sitting for many years in a collection.

Facts about the model

The Zündapp factory operated from 1917 to 1984. The name is an abbreviation of Zünder und Apparatebau G.m.b.H., originally a manufacturer of detonators for military use.

The first motorcycle Zündapp produced was the Z22, introduced in 1921. During World War II, the company produced various models for military use, some of which featured sidecars.

After the war, Zündapp shifted its focus toward smaller and lighter vehicles, especially two-wheelers such as scooters, mopeds, and lightweight motorcycles. Their product line also included a four-wheeled microcar known as the Janus.

From the mid-1960s and for about a decade, Swedish youth culture was split into two major camps: one favored Puch, the other stood firmly by Zündapp. No acts of violence due to this rivalry have been recorded, but countless tales exist of burnouts and wheelies outside the local hot dog stand.

Bankruptcy eventually became inevitable, and Zündapp ceased operations in 1984. The company’s assets, including manufacturing equipment and technical expertise, were taken over by Xunda Motor Co. in Tianjin, China. Between 1987 and 1990, they produced small motorcycles based on the original German Zündapp designs.
