"A ZR-1 with serious power under the hood—tough, stylish, and potent."

Description

Chevrolet Corvette ZR-1 – a sports car that marked a significant technological leap for the Corvette series. The ZR-1 was introduced as a high-performance version of the fourth-generation Corvette (C4) and was developed in collaboration with Lotus, which was owned by General Motors at the time. The goal was to create a Corvette that could rival Europe’s finest sports cars.

This particular example was imported to Sweden, and the current owner is the second in the country. The ZR-1 is one of the sharpest cars Chevrolet has ever produced, and this car has only covered around 25,000 kilometers—something clearly reflected in its excellent condition (see photos).

"Goosebumps" is the right word when you press the accelerator—the sound of the 375 horsepower from the advanced LT5 engine sends shivers down your spine, and you can truly feel the punch in your back. Combined with the unique ZR-1 bodywork, featuring wider rear fenders and different doors, there’s no mistaking this for a regular Corvette—this is the top-tier model.

Previous owners have taken great care of the car and preserved extensive documentation, including receipts, brochures, and the classic "black box" containing a VHS cassette with instructions on how to drive the car. A fun detail is the key that allows you to limit the engine’s output from full to normal—reportedly designed to ease worried parents when their kids borrowed the car.

The suspension can be adjusted in three modes: comfortable touring, sport mode, and the most performance-oriented setting.

The current owner has replaced the oil cooler and hoses, repaired the headlight open/close mechanism, and installed discreet side indicators to meet regulations. The car has been serviced by Custom & Styling, with documentation detailing the work done. Under current ownership, the car has always been stored in a heated garage and used only during summer in good weather.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Runs well in both engine and drivetrain. The braking system functions as it should. A/C functionality is uncertain. A fault code is displayed on the info screen and, according to the owner, it has not been possible to clear it.

  • Interior condition:

The interior is in very good and well-cared-for condition. Both the engine bay and luggage compartment are clean and tidy. Overall, the car is intact, clean, and well maintained.

  • Exterior condition:

Nice original paint. Very clean and well-preserved underneath.

  • General condition:

The condition is as close to new as one could expect for a car that has only covered 25,000 kilometers. The Corvette holds its own in every respect.

Facts about the model

In the 1980s, General Motors set out to prove that the Corvette was more than just an American muscle car. The goal was to show it could compete with Ferrari, Porsche, and other European sports cars in both technology and performance.

To achieve this, GM turned to Lotus—then owned by GM—for their expertise in advanced engine and chassis design. The result was the development of the all-new LT5 engine, the heart of the ZR-1.

The Name and the Legacy
The name “ZR-1” was borrowed from a racing package used in the 1970s, but this version was something entirely different.

Engine: The LT5 – A Technical Masterpiece
The engine was the most groundbreaking feature of the ZR-1:

Type: 5.7-liter V8 (350 cubic inches)

Configuration: Dual overhead camshafts (DOHC), 32 valves

Power Output: 375 hp at 5800 rpm

Torque: 502 Nm at 4800 rpm

Development: Engineered by Lotus, built by Mercury Marine

Unlike the standard pushrod L98 V8 in the regular Corvette, the LT5 was far more advanced and rev-happy. It also featured a unique intake system with a valve disable function—essentially a performance limiter activated by a key, allowing for milder driving when desired.

The LT5 was so wide that parts of the engine bay had to be modified to accommodate it.

Transmission and Drivetrain
Gearbox: ZF S6-40 six-speed manual – known for its durability and precision

Drivetrain: Rear-wheel drive, like all Corvettes

Differential: Limited-slip with ZR-1-specific gearing

Chassis, Suspension, and Wheels
The ZR-1 featured several unique chassis components:

Adjustable Suspension (FX3): Electronically controlled damping system developed with Bilstein

Brakes: Larger vented disc brakes than the standard C4

Tires: Goodyear Eagle Gatorback, extremely wide—315 mm at the rear

Wheels: 17-inch alloys with unique ZR-1 design

The wider rear end wasn’t just cosmetic—it was needed to house the massive rear tires.

Exterior and Design
At first glance, the ZR-1 looked like a standard C4 Corvette. However, key differences included:

Wider rear fenders

Unique round taillights (standard C4 had square)

"ZR-1" badging on the tail

Model-specific rear bumper

This subtle styling made the ZR-1 a true "sleeper"—modest in appearance but capable of taking on supercars.

Driving Experience
The ZR-1 wasn’t just fast—it was refined. In its “valet mode” with reduced engine output, it behaved much like a regular C4. But when the full power was unleashed, the character changed completely. Power delivery was smooth and strong, with a redline around 7000 rpm—exceptionally high for an American V8.

The wide rear track provided excellent cornering stability, and while the steering was precise, it wasn’t quite as communicative as some European rivals.

A Supercar for Half the Price
The ZR-1 could compete head-to-head with the Ferrari Testarossa and Porsche 911 Turbo in terms of performance—at about half the price.
