"Professionally restored and very nice to drive. In the best collectible condition."

Description

This car was manufactured in Gothenburg in the fall of 1958 and sold new in San Diego, USA, in the spring of 1959. A Swedish Volvo collector received a tip about the car during a visit to the Southern California Volvo Club in San Diego in the summer of 2012. The car had been stored away for 20 years, but was intact and in good condition, and started after a start-up service. The car was brought to Sweden, polished up, and test-driven a few times. Then, in 2014, the owner decided to repaint the car because the paint was dull even after polishing. The original color is paint code 31, Midnight Blue, which the car is also painted in now.

During the reassembly, the engine was removed for inspection and overhaul. It was in unusually good condition (good compression, etc.), probably previously overhauled, so only the carburetor and radiator were refurbished and all hoses and wear parts were replaced (along with a major service). The car has only driven 86,800 miles, equivalent to 140 000 Swedish miles.

During reassembly, everything available to buy new from VP-Autoparts was purchased. This included new bumpers, carpets, interior details, insulation, rubber seals, lighting, locks, and many small details. The car has never had rust repairs. It was completely rust-free and untouched, without damage, before disassembly. All the glass is original and the seats were reupholstered in the USA in original-like design. The car was professionally painted by Volvo specialists Ämteruds Bensin and workshop in Charlottenberg. This was done in 2015, and the car is still just as fine, without blisters, sink marks, or other issues.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Newly inspected without any remarks. Everything works and it is great to drive. The 90 hp engine has good power. (The B16 Sport engine has the same horsepower as the B18 Sport engine, 90 hp, except for the last year, 1965, when it was 95 hp).

  • Interior condition:

Very nice interior. Most parts are new from VP.

  • Exterior condition:

Very nice paint and period-appropriate decor. The blue is the original color, code 31. The idea behind the decor was to also stripe the car with racing decals and add extra lights to emphasize the car's sporty character more (they were very successful racing cars in their time). However, the next owner can do this if they feel like it.

Period-appropriate original 5.5-inch JP magnesium wheels with wide, new tires are fitted.

  • General condition:

Very fresh and stylish car. Expensive paint and detailed restoration. A great example to collect and also to drive and have fun with.

Facts about the model

The Volvo bestseller, PV 544, was manufactured from August 1958 (model -59) to August 1965 in nearly 250,000 units, with only a few percent in the sport version. The dual carburetors provided a welcome boost in power to the engine. This, combined with the car's relatively low weight, made the PV Sport very fast and sporty for its time. It was the equivalent of a Golf GTI in those days. Most of the sport versions were exported to the USA, where only the sport version was sold. At that time, the USA was Volvo's most important market. Both in the USA and Sweden, these cars were often used as daily drivers and thus many have worn out, leaving few remaining.

Today, the PV Sport is one of the most sought-after Volvo models. Few Volvo cars draw as much attention as a genuine Volvo PV Sport at car meets and other events where they appear. Even by today's standards, the car feels lively and stable, making it fun to drive and able to keep up well with modern traffic.
