"This vehicle has both endured hard use and been taken care of, in various stages over the years. Today, it's a pleasant car that brings joy and has many fine details, but it could also climb higher in the value chain with different investments."

Description

This car was first registered for traffic in Sweden in January 1960. Its history is then obscure until March 1984, when the current owner purchased the vehicle. It had been used and was somewhat worn at the time of purchase. The rear hatch was blue, one fender was green, and the interior and engine were in so-so condition. However, there was potential, not least the pleasant sunroof. The car then received a new paint job (without removing the windows), a replacement engine of 34 horsepower was installed and remains available, should the buyer wish. The carburetor from that engine is currently in the car. The gearbox was replaced with a newer fully synchronized one. A fine leather interior was tailored for the seats and rear bench, along with loose headrests, and new carpets in the original style were also fitted. Porsche wheels from Brazil were acquired, as well as genuine American-style bumper guards with braces. It also received a new headliner and soft top. It then served as an enthusiast's and everyday car for 20 years. It covered many pleasant miles, including a long trip down to Mallorca, and many summers were spent driving around Gotland. About ten years ago, it was put further back in the garage, among the owner's many enthusiast cars. Now it has been brought out, started up, inspected ("forever"), and is ready to drive for a new owner.

The instruction manual and four original wheels are included.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The car starts easily and runs well. A compression test shows even values across all cylinders. The clutch engages somewhat high but functions properly, and the gears and brakes are also working well. At startup, the spark plugs were changed, and it's certainly time for a review and overhaul of the other ignition parts, as well as a general service after having been stationary for a longer period. It hasn't been checked on a lift. However, at the latest inspection, no remarks were made. Nonetheless, a Beetle approaching retirement age could surely use a thorough check-up and maintenance. For instance, the foot steps have rust damage.

  • Interior condition:

The seats, rear bench, fabric carpets, headliner, and upholstery have been quality renovated 30 yeas ago, and are in fine condition. Door panels are original with some wear. Instruments, steering wheel, and dashboard are in good condition for their age. Instrument lighting out of order. There's an original Philips radio that has been converted by Benndorf Radio to FM but can also be used on the AM band.

  • Exterior condition:

A 40-year-old repaint in white (the original color was probably light gray) that has its blemishes. Shiny parts, glass, and rubber are in good condition with some patina. Wheels and tires are in fine shape. The sunroof has been redone and is nice and tight. The engine and luggage compartments are in good and patinated condition.

  • General condition:

A delightful Beetle in original design, with both period-specific extras and upgrades that have been made over the years. It has been used, mainly as a summer car, with the roof open. In many ways, a lovely car from the happy 1960s. As is increasingly the case, use it as it is or refine it to your liking. The starting point is both charming and pleasant - a true classic and a joy to drive.

Facts about the model

Volumes have been written about the history of the VW 1200, from the project's inception in the 1930s, how British soldiers restarted operations after World War II, and how the first cars made their way to Sweden and Scania Vabis in 1948. So, let's quickly jump ahead 12 years to 1960. VW ushered in the new decade by removing the semaphore turn signals on the B-pillar and instead installing turn signals in the taillights and white turn signals with chrome fixtures at the top of the front fenders. The seats were also slightly contoured for better comfort. From there, various improvements were made year by year, and the Type 1 continued into the 1960s, maintaining prominent positions in sales statistics.
