"A bold German roadster with the coveted M badge."

Description

The current owner purchased this 2006 BMW Z4M Roadster in Stockholm about 10 years ago from a man who had brought the car with him as part of his household move from the United States. This model was produced in the USA primarily for the American market and was only manufactured for three years, from 2006 to 2008.

In Sweden, the BMW has been used sparingly during the summer seasons and has been stored indoors, covered and off the road during the winters. The car has recently passed inspection with no remarks, and all equipment functions as it should. It comes well-equipped, including heated electric seats, AC, navigation, a dual-scale speedometer showing both km/h and mph, and an electric soft top that can be opened with the remote key.

It is fitted with new summer tires that have been driven approximately 1,000 kilometers. The car is also equipped with an Eisenmann race exhaust system that enhances performance and gives it a more engaging sound; the original exhaust system is included separately (see photo). It was last serviced about three years ago, but has seen minimal use since—essentially only driven between home and the annual inspection, around 10 to 30 kilometers per year.

According to available information, a total of 5,070 units of this model were produced, with only 400 finished in red. The BMW comes with two sets of keys and extensive documentation, including receipts, inspection records, service history, and more.

Facts about the model

BMW has a long tradition of sporty and open models. As early as the 1930s and 1950s, the company produced several vehicles with sporting ambitions—for those seeking a bit of wind in their hair. During the 1960s, 70s, and 80s, the focus shifted to closed-body cars, mostly sedans and coupés with GT and sport-oriented characteristics. While a few had their roofs removed, BMW didn’t produce a true classic open two-seater sports car during that period.

That changed in 1989 with the launch of the distinctive BMW Z1. The “Z” stands for Zukunft, the German word for "future." Its most notable feature was its unconventional doors, which didn’t open outward but rather slid down into the high door sills. Though not a commercial success at the time, the Z1 is now a highly sought-after collector's item.

Around the same time, the Mazda MX-5 Miata appeared and completely redefined the market with its simple, 1950s/60s-style roadster concept. It turned out that there was strong demand for small, spirited convertibles. This gave many car manufacturers sleepless nights—but also prompted them to act fast. If the Z1 was BMW’s experimental step, it clearly whetted their appetite.

In 1995, BMW responded with the Z3—a model that became an instant success, even making an appearance in a James Bond film. BMW also paid homage to its classic 1950s 507 model with the stunning Z8—a truly beautiful car with a price tag to match. For broader appeal, the company focused on more accessible models, and the Z3 was succeeded by the Z4.

The first generation of the Z4, the E85 roadster, was produced from 2003 to 2008. As with the Z3, a coupé version (E86) followed later. Engines ranged from four-cylinder to straight-six units, spanning 2.0L to 3.2L and producing between 150 and 343 hp. The top-of-the-line M model featured the 343 hp engine. The standard 3.0i straight-six produced 231 hp in the earlier years. Transmission options included six-speed manuals and automatics.

In total, just under 190,000 units of the E85 and E86 models were produced.
