"This fine older Mercedes is in near-original condition—solid, honest, and highly usable."

Description

According to the current owner, this Mercedes was owned by a doctor from Halmstad during the 1970s. A name plaque bearing the doctor’s name is still present in the car—see photo. Before the vehicle came into the current family’s possession, the fenders were repainted due to wear.

The current owner’s grandfather purchased the car in 1988 and drove it sparingly, mostly on short local outings. The car was regularly maintained, serviced, and kept in good condition. In 2023, the current owner took over and recognized that some areas needed attention. This included a cylinder head refurbishment, new gaskets for the wheel cylinders, new brake shoes all around, new engine mounts, and a light carburetor overhaul.

The Mercedes hasn’t seen much use since the ownership transfer. While no service book is included, the car comes with two sets of keys, a selection of tools stored in a “doctor’s bag,” and an “Edison Safety Lamp” designed to attach to the roof. The lamp is powered by connecting its cables to the car battery and emits both red and white light.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts easily. Runs well in both engine and drivetrain. The brakes engage evenly and feel solid. The clock and original temperature gauge are not working, but the car has been fitted with an aftermarket temp gauge—see photo. The windshield washer system is non-functional due to detached hoses. A new exhaust system has been installed.

  • Interior condition:

The interior is in a very attractive, patinated condition, showing tasteful signs of age. The headliner is excellent, and the rubber floor mats are in fine shape. The door seals are likewise good, with only a few small cracks—see photo.

  • Exterior condition:

The car was partially repainted many years ago. The paint is worn and cracked, with a nice patina for those who appreciate that look—see photos. The lower corners of the rear fenders show scrape marks—see photos. The chrome trim is somewhat worn and pitted.

  • General condition:

A Mercedes in a very appealing, patinated, and well-used condition. An honest and solid car, ready to be driven.

Facts about the model

The Mercedes-Benz 220 was produced between July 1951 and August 1955. After World War II, the company had limited resources for product development. Having developed the 170 S model, largely based on pre-war technology, Mercedes focused on their flagship 300 series. However, work also continued on a new mid-range car, which would later become the 180 and 220 models during the 1950s.

The engine for the latter—a small inline-six with an overhead camshaft—was ready well before the rest of the car. Mercedes decided to take advantage of this by launching an interim model while awaiting the new car. The W187 was quickly created by placing the modern engine into the outdated 170 S body. To accommodate the larger engine, the car was given a new front end with integrated headlights.

The exclusive two-door models were now sold exclusively with the new engine. Production continued for just over a year after the sedan was replaced in May 1954 by the new W180 220. During this final production year, a coupe version was also built—limited to only 85 units.
