Volvo LV60 DB Epa-traktor — 1929

This EPA tractor is part of Sweden’s unique cultural heritage. EPAs were built in large numbers during the 1940s to help modernize and streamline Swedish agriculture. Today, nearly all of them have been scrapped.

"Test driving was not possible, but the owner guarantees that the engine will start with the installation of a new 6-volt battery and a general service check."

Description

The truck was converted into a tractor in the late 1940s and registered under the then-current EPA tractor regulations, which were primarily aimed at promoting a more motorized form of agriculture in Sweden. These vehicles served as a kind of emergency tractor solution for less affluent farmers, enabling increased productivity even on smaller farms.

As economic conditions improved and mass production of purpose-built agricultural tractors—such as the Ferguson “Grållen”—got underway, the need for these EPA tractors gradually disappeared. Today, very few of them remain.

This particular example was discovered by a previous owner in a barn while purchasing a property. It was later restored by a team of volunteers at Volvo CE Arvika Works during the winter of 2006. Following the restoration, it was displayed at Volvo’s own factory museum in Arvika. The current owner acquired it at auction in 2020 for his vehicle collection. As space is now needed for other purposes, it’s time for this piece of history to find a new enthusiast.

An old license plate and an extract from the historic registry are included for origin verification and registration inspection. It is believed that the vehicle could be re-registered as a tractor, but this cannot be guaranteed.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Straight six-cylinder, low-revving DB engine, paired with a manual gearbox and a rigidly mounted rear axle in accordance with the 1940 EPA tractor regulations. Equipped with a 6-volt electrical system. The battery is missing, so no start attempt has been made by BWA. According to the owner, it was last driven in 2020. There is a rust hole at the rear of the muffler—see photo for details.

  • Interior condition:

Rustic interior featuring a padded and sprung seat cushion upholstered in vinyl. The fuel tank is mounted beneath the seat.

  • Exterior condition:

The vehicle feels genuinely authentic, not least thanks to details like the old wardrobe doors used for the cab. These could be removed during field work on hot summer days. The right door needs new hinges. The tires appear to have held up well. A set of vintage, custom-made steel agricultural tractor wheels is included.

  • General condition:

Possibly Sweden’s only preserved and drivable genuine EPA built on a Volvo LV60? A fun, nostalgic piece that forms part of our rolling cultural heritage.
