Description

This car was first registered for road use in Sweden on November 25, 1976. The first owner placed his order a week earlier, and on December 15 he took delivery of the vehicle. He cared for it meticulously and kept it for just over 33 years. When he stopped driving due to old age, a close friend was given the opportunity to purchase the car. He officially acquired it on June 1, 2010. He continued to care for it and drove it sparingly—the car has covered less than 5,000 km over the past 10 years. When not in use, it was always kept in a private garage in a quiet suburban neighborhood.

At the time of its last inspection in the summer of last year, the odometer read 178,290 km. The car is now being sold by his heirs. They have driven it less than 10 km and had it inspected. It received minor notes for a broken lightbulb and worn front brake pads—these issues have been addressed (see receipt).

Included with the car are the original owner’s manual, inspection records dating back to 1999, and a few additional documents and receipts. There are two sets of keys, older studded winter tires (it hasn't been used in winter for several years), and a basket with various small spare items. Roadworthy and ready to drive.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

    Started easily and ran smoothly and calmly in both engine and drivetrain. During a short test drive in a suburban area, the steering, handling, clutch, gearbox, and brakes all appeared to function well.

    The car has not been inspected on a lift, but the vital components looked good, and the vehicle inspection report noted no remarks regarding the underbody.

  • Interior condition:

    Pleasant original interior in a vibrant blue tone. Both the front seats and rear bench are in nicely preserved condition with good comfort. The car has had seat covers fitted, likely since new. Door panels and trim are in great shape. Carpets and headliner are intact and clean overall, though the front carpets are somewhat dirty, and there’s some discoloration on the driver’s side floor.

    Steering wheel, controls, dashboard, and gauges are all in good condition. All electrical functions work properly. Period-correct stereo is functional, with speakers mounted in the front doors. An alarm system is installed, though its functionality is uncertain.

  • Exterior condition:

    Appears to retain its original paintwork, which is in nice condition overall. There have been some minor touch-ups and there’s typical wear consistent with age and mileage, including the occasional stone chip, small dent, and scratch. There is a repair at the lower right rear wheel arch that should be reviewed. The lower edges of the rear fenders and sills also have areas worth checking. There are slight signs of rust beginning to show at the front wheel arches.

    Otherwise, the inner front fenders and wheel arch edges are in good condition. Glass, chrome, trim, emblems, and lighting components are likewise in good shape considering the car’s age and mileage. Wheels and tires are on par with the rest of the car. Equipped with an engine block heater socket. Both the engine bay and the luggage compartment are also well preserved.

  • General condition:

    This is a true Swedish classic and a historically significant enthusiast and collector vehicle, soon to celebrate its 50th anniversary. Once again, it proves that the combination of the right owners, a well-documented history, and Volvo’s renowned quality is more than just a slogan—Volvo’s value truly endures.

Facts about the model

The Volvo 240 was introduced in August 1974 as an updated version of the 140 series, designed by Jan Wilsgaard. It has since become a true icon in the Swedish national identity. Whether you were brought home from the hospital in a taxi, went on IKEA trips with your parents, or rode with your grandparents to the countryside—nearly everyone in Sweden has a connection to these cars.

The VESC safety concept car partly inspired the new model’s prominent front-end design. In its first year, three engine options were available: the B20A, B21A, and B21E. Equipment levels were L, DL, GL, and GLE—the latter two offered only as four-door models and the only ones available with the B21E engine. Throughout the 240’s production run, we can see how Swedish preferences shifted from two-door models to the more practical four-door variants. Many different versions and updates were introduced over the years. When the new 740 model debuted in 1984, some assumed the 240’s days were numbered—but Volvo had other plans and continued developing the model.

Over time, a variety of engines were offered, including petrol, diesel, and turbocharged versions. The 240 came in two-, four-, and five-door body styles. While some versions aimed for sportiness or luxury, the DL and GL variants remain the most emblematic of the Swedish “folkhem” ideal.

There were faster cars on the market, but few could match the Volvo 240’s unique combination of simplicity, durability, quality, and safety—it was a grounded, practical family car. A total of over 2.8 million Volvo 240s were produced between 1974 and 1993, and today this once-common people’s car has become a beloved collector’s item, ready to celebrate its 50th birthday.
