Mercedes-Benz 600 6,3 W100 — 1970

One of the most expensive and prestigious luxury cars of the late 1960s and early 1970s, was reserved for the wealthy, famous, and powerful. This example is one of just 2,190 short-wheelbase W100s ever built—making it a rare and highly desirable piece of Mercedes-Benz history.

"These cars still command an undeniable presence and feature advanced engineering that even modern vehicles struggle to match. This example remains in running condition and, despite being stored in a garage for many years, would benefit from a thorough mechanical review."

Description

Long-Term Ownership – Imported from Germany, Originally U.S.-Sold

The family inherited the car from their father, who bought it in 1993. It was originally sold new in the USA, but when the current owner’s father imported it during the 1990s, it was displayed in a museum in Germany. In the same year it was imported, it was also registered. It still has its miles odometer, which currently reads 82 269 miles (approximately 131 200 km).

The car was added to the father’s private collection, with the last recorded inspection taking place in 1997. It remained in light use until 1999, after which it was stored in his collection. Following his passing, the car was inherited by the family. Now, after many years, they have decided it's time to let it go to a new home.

The car has recently undergone a review of the hydraulic system, fuel system, and brakes. It has been started and driven lightly, and overall, it presents in very good condition both inside and out.

One of the car’s most distinctive features is its complex 150-bar hydraulic system, which powers the windows, seats, boot lid, and automatic doors. During testing, all systems were functioning except for the windows, which were unresponsive—likely due to lack of recent use.

The car is also equipped with pneumatic, height-adjustable self-levelling suspension. It does respond at different levels, although operation is currently slower than normal.

After standing for many years, the car would benefit from being driven regularly and receiving a full inspection and service to bring it fully back to form.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The car starts easily and the engine runs well. It’s surprisingly easy to drive, with a smooth-shifting gearbox and functional brakes. One minor quirk: the horn sounds when turning hard left.

As noted, the car has been in storage for at least 25 years and will require a thorough inspection and full service to be roadworthy again. A new inspection will also be needed.

Currently, the power windows are not working, but the seat adjustment and boot lid closer operate as they should. The car sits on attractive wheels fitted with usable, though older, tires.

  • Interior condition:

The interior is clean, tidy, and remains in original condition. The leather seats are in good shape throughout, with only minor marks and some light wear on the rear seat—nothing a proper leather treatment wouldn’t improve.

The door cards, carpets, curtains, wood trim, and headliner are all in good condition and show only light signs of age. The dashboard and instrumentation are well kept, with no visible damage. With a bit of additional cleaning and detailing, the interior could present even better.

  • Exterior condition:

The car presents very well, with no visible damage or signs of rust. The body panels are straight and well aligned, with the only note being that the boot lid sits slightly proud on the left side and may need minor adjustment.

The underbody is clean and solid, with no standout rust issues—though it appears there may have been an older repair around the spare wheel well. Chrome trim and exterior detailing are bright and in good condition throughout.

  • General condition:

It’s a very eye-catching car that would shine even more with some polishing and light cosmetic attention inside and out. The main focus should be on the mechanical side—a proper service and thorough review will easily bring it back to full roadworthy condition.
