"A hefty machine to maneuver, but the automatic transmission and power steering make the job easier—offering a driving feel not unlike that of a contemporary American car."

Description

Ordered in 1953 by Bourden Tube Inc. in Newton, CT, which subsequently canceled the purchase. The importing dealer, Inskip Rolls-Royce in New York, therefore kept the car as a demonstrator and for its own use. A few years later it was sold to California, where it became part of the high life, complete with film appearances and being repainted pink.

The car’s American-era history is a fascinating read—an extensive binder contains a wealth of documentation, some from that period but mostly from its time in Sweden. It was imported from the USA to Sweden in 1989 and registered for road use in February 1990. An owner in Kristianstad drove the car for 28 years before Nisse Nilsson of Autoseum in Simrishamn acquired it for his collection in 2018. Today, it is being sold by Nilsson’s estate, as the car had been privately owned.

The most recent approved inspection was carried out on July 6, 2016, and the vehicle is therefore exempt from further inspections, having been in a valid inspection period when the new regulations came into effect on April 20, 2018.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The big six-cylinder engine starts easily when warm but tends to need some starting fluid for cold starts. The GM automatic transmission engages firmly but shifts well. The engine temperature tends to rise; during the test drive and filming, we paused a couple of times to let the engine and coolant cool down.

  • Interior condition:

The rear seat appears to be original, while the front bench seems to have been reupholstered. The walnut trim is cracked in the center and along the lower edge of the dashboard. The wood panel near the windshield is dry, as are the door handles, where the finish has worn off.

  • Exterior condition:

A letter from the factory states that upon delivery the car was finished in blue/cream white with a beige leather interior. Other documents indicate that it was later painted pink and then white. Today it wears a presentable paintjob, albeit executed to a simpler standard. White was—and remains—a popular colour in regions such as California and the Middle East. The car is fitted with older bias-ply tyres that still have good tread.

  • General condition:

A luxury giant of its time and an important status symbol for those with such needs, yet also a car featuring innovative technology for its era. The auction vehicle is essentially a roadworthy piece ready for active use without the demands of show condition, though it does require a new battery and a basic service.

Facts about the model

Among the documentation is a research report entitled “Tracking down the siblings of HJ Mulliner Sports Touring Limousine ELW5 body style 7348.” It’s a valuable piece of the puzzle, revealing that only 20 of these were ever built—and just two in left-hand-drive. Should you wish to undertake a future restoration back to factory specification, there is ample information and expertise available to guide the process.
