Description

This beautifully preserved Mercedes 220 SE Coupé was originally sold new in Sundsvall in 1963. It remained there until 2018, when it was acquired by the owner prior to the current one. The previous owner had purchased the car in 1986 and began an extensive restoration. The vehicle was entrusted to a vocational school, where all rust issues were addressed.

When the next owner took over, the restoration continued. The body was stripped down to bare metal before being repainted in color DB 180—a shade used on Mercedes cars in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Much else was also restored, repaired, or replaced. The engine was rebuilt, the clutch and hydraulic components were replaced, and the radiator, heater core, instruments, brakes, and braking system were overhauled. The car also received new tires and a new windshield.

A restoration of the original interior completed the project. The chrome trim was re-chromed—a demanding process that required considerable effort. Included with the car is documentation, including receipts for work and parts totaling over 200,000 SEK (see photos). The car was ready for inspection in April 2022.

Since the restoration, the car has mainly been used for classic car shows and has driven only 2,700 km. Under the current owner, who removed the window tint and has used the car sparingly, it has covered just 128 km.

The Mercedes is equipped with a period-correct, self-seeking Blaupunkt radio and is delivered with a set of keys. No service book is available.

Facts about the model

The W111 was introduced in August 1959 in three versions, each with varying levels of equipment and different tuning of the well-known 2.2-liter inline-six engine. The body, which it shared with the four-cylinder W110, featured panoramic windows and tailfins—a design that had been highly fashionable in the U.S. during the 1950s, but soon began to feel dated.

As a result, the W111 was succeeded by the W108 in August 1965. However, Mercedes-Benz didn’t abandon the W111 body style entirely. In July 1965, they introduced the 230 S as an entry-level model to the S-Class lineup. This model remained in production until January 1968.
