Description

He is a true petrolhead story that resonates with many of us. It begins with the owner's father bringing home a brand new Saab 99cc Turbo in Cardinal Red back in 1978. The car, with its Inca alloys, double spoilers, and a powerful 145hp turbo engine, became the epitome of coolness in the eyes of a young boy. The dream of owning one was etched deep within his heart.

Years went by, and in 2019, fate intervened. A cardinal red 99cc, fully restored and repainted, appeared on a well-known buy and sell site. It had Inca wheels and lacked any identification. The seller had to halt the project due to the loss of their garage, without much knowledge about parts availability or other details. Seizing the opportunity, the owner decided to purchase it and bring the dream to life.

The owner was fortunate enough to stumble upon another incredible find. After a few months, the seller from Örebro provided me with information about an original 1978 99 Turbo located in Karlskrona. Despite being rusted, it possessed a well-preserved interior and a mere 140,000 kilometers on the odometer, with a matching numbers engine and gearbox it was the perfect donor car.

Describing the extensive 450+ hours of work is a challenge, but here's a summary: We obtained a 1978 body without a sunroof and carefully transferred the whole roof equipped with sunroof from the donor car. The donor car's identity was then meticulously transferred to the new body. The donor car was disassembled into numerous well-marked bags and boxes. Salvageable parts were blasted and painted, bearings were replaced, and most bushings were renewed. The fuel tank was cleaned using citric acid, while a new pump, level sensor, and pressure accumulator were installed. New fuel lines and brake pipes were fitted. A new NOS brake servo and aftermarket master cylinder were installed. The clutch and slave cylinders were rebuilt with new gaskets. The radiator underwent refurbishment with a new core. The engine underwent a complete overhaul, including honing the cylinders, minimal planing of the cylinder head, valve lapping, and the installation of new bearings, piston rings, and a repacked water pump with a new bearing. The gearbox remained untouched, except for fresh oil and improved internal drive units. An aftermarket exhaust system from the Saab Club was installed. The headliner was replaced with a new one sourced from the Saab Club. The rest of the interior remains entirely original with minimal repairs.

Notably, the owner is a Mechanical Engineer with 22 years of experience working with Saab gearboxes and a true Saab enthusiast through and through. Since its completion a few years ago, the car consistently receives 5-star reviews from test centers. This entire project serves as a tribute to the owner's father, Stig, who ignited his son's dream, thus completing a remarkable circle of passion and dedication.
