Volvo 244 GL 2,3 — 1983

At first glance, it gives the impression of a new car. For many years, one of Sweden’s most common cars, here equipped with a tow bar and a roof ladder. Four-speed with overdrive.

"It’s been a long time since I saw a Volvo 244 in such good condition."

Description

Here we have a Volvo 244 that is over 40 years old and has had only two owners during all those years. The previous owner purchased the car in the fall of 1984, when it was just two years old, and kept it until 2018 when the current owner took over. The Volvo has only been driven around 77,000 km since new. You’ll have to look closely to find traces of use, though there are, of course, minor imperfections.

During the 1980s and 1990s, these cars were largely responsible for keeping Sweden on the move. Remarkably, you can still often spot them in daily traffic, especially outside metropolitan areas, although most of them have likely clocked between 200,000 and 300,000 km by now.

This particular example has been awarded a gold star by Opus Vehicle Inspection, attesting to its excellent condition.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

uns as well as one would expect from a Volvo 240 that has only covered about 77,000 kilometers.

  • Interior condition:

The interior is in excellent condition. The exterior sun visor, the roof ladder, has protected the upholstery from fading.

  • Exterior condition:

Very good condition. A small dent can be seen here and there. Even when you find well-preserved cars, they often have some scuff marks on the bumpers from the driver maneuvering in tight spaces and bumping into obstacles. However, this car has no such damage.

  • General condition:

A very good car in near-new condition, but it has still covered 77,000 kilometers, which should be taken into consideration.

Facts about the model

Sweden’s best-selling car model. Starting in 1983, Volvo decided to abandon the old model designations 242, 244, and 245 – from then on, they were all called 240. In 1984, all variants with fuel-injected engines – namely GLT, GLE, and Turbo – received a new front end with a raised hood and black grille. They also gained position lights on the front fenders.

For the 1985 model year, all engines were redesigned to reduce internal friction. This lower friction reduced fuel consumption and improved cold-start performance. The engines featured a new cast-iron block and aluminum cylinder head.

The Volvo 240, which was based on the 140 series, was introduced in 1974. Over the years, it underwent several changes, and when its successor, the 740, was launched in 1984, many thought the 240 would be discontinued. However, production continued until 1993.

Initially, the petrol engines included the older B20 and the newer B21, later transitioning to the B19, B21, or B23 (until 1984), after which only the larger engine, now renamed B230, remained. The manual transmissions in the first year were M40 (4-speed) and M41 (4-speed with overdrive), but these were replaced by the M45 and M46 the following year. Starting with the 1983 model year, the M47 (5-speed) was also introduced on the GL.

An automatic transmission was available as an option. In the 1975 and 1976 models, this was a 3-speed Borg-Warner BW35, which was replaced in 1977 by the 3-speed Borg-Warner BW55. Beginning with the 1980 model year, a more modern 4-speed Aisin-Warner AW71 was introduced on the GLE and GLT, and the following year, on the Turbo. This became standard across all models starting with the 1985 model year.
