Volkswagen Typ2 T3 Bus Caravelle GL 112i — 1988

Caravelle GL with a 112 hp Wasserboxer engine was the top model in Volkswagen's bus series during the 1980s. Here is a well-preserved example with original paint. It has been stored by a collector since 2007 and has now been brought out, serviced, and approved by the vehicle inspection.

Description

This car spent its early years in Norrbotten, which is why it has been unusually well-preserved and free from rust. In the spring of 2007, it was sold to a collector in Luleå, who used it over the summer before storing it away as winter approached. The car was put aside awaiting a repaint, as it had clear coat peeling on the roof and minor scratches all around. It remained stored until 2017 when a VW enthusiast from Gothenburg purchased it. He serviced the car, fixed some minor issues, and drove it during the summer. The speedometer was also repaired, as it had stopped working in the summer of 2007 and had been replaced with one from another car. (Because of this, the odometer reading is uncertain. The repaired original speedometer currently reads 169,000 km, but the owner mentioned that the car was driven with a different speedometer (from a scrapped car) before the original was repaired. We estimate the total mileage to be slightly over 200,000 km, which aligns with the condition of the paint, seats, steering wheel, and carpets, among other things.)

The T3 Caravelle was, in its time, a forerunner to today's larger SUVs. It was a versatile vehicle that served as a luxurious passenger car, comfortable long-distance cruiser, utility vehicle, and family car. Even today, its comfortable and elegant driving experience is appreciated. The car feels lively, shifts and pulls smoothly at all RPMs, and remains stable on the road with excellent suspension.

This is a GL model, which includes armrest-equipped seats, upgraded upholstery, headliner, and carpets. The dashboard also features finer upholstery. Externally, you'll find chrome trim around the windows, tinted glass, and a ventilation window in the middle. It also boasts chrome bumpers and four square recessed auxiliary lights in the front, among other features.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Very enjoyable to drive. It's easy to understand why these cars remain sought after even 40 years after their introduction. They offer remarkably good comfort and handling. The gearbox operates smoothly. The car was last serviced in 2017, so another service might now be due.

When starting the car, the temperature gauge warning light blinks but turns off once the engine reaches the correct operating temperature. We've checked the operating temperature and coolant levels before and after driving, and everything is in order, so we suspect the sensor for the warning light may need replacing. Otherwise, there is nothing to remark on.

  • Interior condition:

Normal condition. The seats, upholstered in gray velour, are in excellent shape. Carpets and door panels show some wear (see photos). There is some damage to the metal where the radio was installed and a crack in the plastic on the handbrake handle (see photos). Overall, the car gives a good impression.

  • Exterior condition:

The paint shows normal wear for a car with over 200,000 km on the odometer. There are stone chips, small scratches, and a few minor dents, including on the sliding door and the rear corners. The clear coat is peeling on the roof (see photos). There is also a hole in the center of the roof with an antenna cable.

Underneath the car, it is surprisingly intact, clean, and free of significant rust, suggesting it has been garage-kept and driven on salt-free roads in northern Sweden. The engine bay is also in unusually good condition.

  • General condition:

An exceptionally well-preserved and fine Caravelle GL. This is an honest and untouched original car that works well as it is. It would also be an excellent candidate for a high-quality restoration. With new paint and carpets, it could be brought to top condition.

It’s rare to find a T3 without rust damage—this one doesn’t even have rust in the seams along the sides of the body. As mentioned, the car retains its original paint throughout. It passed inspection in late November 2024 with no remarks.

Facts about the model

The T3 Transporter/Bus, produced from 1979 to 1992, was the third generation of Volkswagen's iconic Transporter series. The T3 was the last model with a rear-mounted engine, and this, combined with rear-wheel drive, provided excellent traction on poor and slippery roads.

The early models featured air-cooled engines, but later, modern water-cooled engines were introduced, ensuring better performance and reliability. This particular example is equipped with the largest engine, the 112i, a 2.1-liter unit.

The Caravelle GL was the luxury version, designed to accommodate eight passengers with upgraded seats and interior materials for maximum comfort. Today, it is rare and highly sought after by collectors worldwide.
