"A fine little premium car from Opel’s golden era in Sweden. This car has led a quiet life and was almost forgotten for over 25 years until the current owner brought it back to life. Largely in its original condition, there are details that could be improved, or you could drive it as is. A lot of mechanical work has been done in recent years, with the ambition of preserving its original state as much as possible."

Description

This car was registered for traffic and its first owner on May 16, 1966. With the registration number EA 942 (Östergötland County), where it still resides, it led a quiet life and was used sparingly. In July 1993, it was stored in a barn. In September 2019, the car was passed down to the great-grandchild of the first owner. He restored the family heirloom both mechanically and cosmetically, got it back on the road, and had it inspected.

When it was taken out of the barn, the current owner carried out the following work:

Scraping the undercarriage and applying new rust protection where the old had come loose, as well as painting work. Installing a new exhaust system. Completely overhauling the brakes, including new brake lines, refurbished calipers and pads at the front, and refurbished drums with new cylinders and brake shoes at the rear. Painting the replaced front fenders and scraping and repainting the sills. Adding new rubber seals for the doors/thresholds and new rubber and trim moldings for the front and rear windows. The car comes with some spare parts, the original instruction manual, the service booklet, and the first registration certificate. Two sets of keys are included, along with an extra key for the fuel cap. The odometer shows 2170 km, but as it has recently reset, the actual mileage is 102 170 km. Fully inspected and ready to drive.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts easily and ran well in both the engine and drivetrain. During a calm test drive in cold weather and winter road conditions with summer tires, it performed lively and well. Steering, road handling, and brakes were excellent. We had to keep the choke slightly open, as it didn’t idle perfectly in the cold. The clutch and gear shifting worked fine, but there was some noise from the throw-out bearing and slightly imprecise gear positions. Not inspected on a lift, but everything visible appeared to be in good condition.

  • Interior condition:

The interior has been restored and is in good original condition with mild wear. The seats, both front and rear, have good firmness. Door panels, interior panels, and carpets are in good condition, although the upper edge of the right rear panel has come loose. The parcel shelf shows some wear. The headliner is in good shape, as are the steering wheel, controls, buttons, and instruments. The functionality of the fuel gauge and clock is uncertain, but everything else works as it should. New rubber seals have been installed on the doors and thresholds.

  • Exterior condition:

The paintwork, which is reportedly largely original, looks good and shows normal wear for its age and mileage. There are minor polishing or scuff marks, likely from a tarp, at the rear. When the current owner took over, the front fenders had been replaced but not painted. This has now been done, though there is a slight difference in shade. Glass, chrome, trim, and lighting details are in good condition. The small trims for the new front fenders and the Kadett emblems are included but not yet installed. Wheels and tires are in good condition, though the decorative hubcaps are missing. The engine bay and trunk are in good condition with normal wear for their age and mileage.

  • General condition:

In 1966, Opel ranked among the top three in sales statistics in Sweden, following Volvo and VW. The Kadett was a popular bestseller, and the stylish coupé with Luxe attributes appealed to those seeking that little extra in design. This car, with its history, mileage, and solid condition, makes for a delightful and charming classic and enthusiast vehicle.

Facts about the model

Opel was founded by Adam Opel in 1862 and quickly achieved success selling sewing machines. In 1886, the company began producing bicycles and soon became Germany's largest manufacturer of two-wheelers. The first cars were produced in 1898 but were a flop. Undeterred, Opel tried again in 1902, this time in collaboration with the French company Darracq, and the results were much better. The company grew rapidly, and by the 1920s, Opel had become one of the largest vehicle manufacturers in Germany and Europe. General Motors invested in Opel in the late 1920s and acquired a majority shareholding in the company in 1931.

The Kadett was a car model that was produced in two phases: first from 1936 to 1940, and then again from 1962 to 1993. When the first generation was introduced, it featured a unibody construction, just like its larger sibling, the Olympian, which had debuted a year earlier. The Kadett quickly became a popular compact car, capturing a 59% market share in its class by 1938. However, after World War II, the Soviet Union seized the production line as part of war reparations and continued producing the car for ten years under the name Moskvitsh 400.

After the war, Opel resumed car production in West Germany and gradually recovered. However, the Kadett was no longer part of its lineup. As demand for small, economical cars surged in the late 1950s and early 1960s, Opel reintroduced the Kadett in 1962 with the A model. This new version featured a square design, a two-door body, a 1000 cc four-cylinder engine, and rear-wheel drive. It was a simple yet practical family car, soon expanded to include variants like the Caravan station wagon and a two-door coupé.

In 1966, the new B model was introduced. While based on the same technology as its predecessor, it grew in size in every dimension. The Kadett once again became a bestseller, and Opel released a variety of versions ranging from the basic model to more luxurious options with features like chrome trim, vinyl roofs, and premium interiors under the Olympia badge. Opel also embraced the growing GT trend with the Rally-Kadett Coupé and Sport Sedan. The Rally Kadett Sprint came equipped with a tuned 1900 cc engine from the Rekord, producing 106 hp DIN. A simpler Super model from 1970, featuring an 1100 cc engine with a single carburetor, delivered 55 hp. Super models offered more equipment, including chrome hubcaps and upgraded interiors.

In 1973, the C model was introduced, followed by the D model in 1979, and finally the Kadett E, produced from 1984 to 1993. Afterward, the Astra took over as the model name.
