"Older restoration in a representative condition. Runs well and remains a super practical Kombi model that is becoming increasingly hard to find today"

Description

The present owner purchased the car from an estate sale last year. It was first registered on 1968-07-18 and appears to have spent much of its life in the Dalarna region of Sweden.

The chassis number 070135 confirms that the car was originally built with a B18 engine, as production of the B20 began later in 1968 from chassis number 070300 onwards. At some point in its history, the car was upgraded to a B20 engine, which is a positive improvement, especially for longer drives thanks to its smoother and more relaxed performance.

Last year, the owner replaced the front plastic wings with correct original metal ones, carried out general rust repairs, and repainted the car in light blue. Some older welding and repair work can be found in places, reflecting earlier restoration work.

Today, the car is presentable and runs and drives well. There are a few cosmetic details that can be improved over time, and the interior seats would benefit from re-stitching or recovering. That said, this is very much a car to use, enjoy, and drive during the summer, rather than a garage-only showpiece.

The mileage is believed to be 167,073 km. The front wing mirror is missing, but the car is included with three spare mirrors, one of which is from a newer model.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts easily on full choke and needs a few minutes to reach operating temperature, after which it runs and drives well. The engine and gearbox perform fine, the car feels stable on the road, and the brakes work well. It would ideally benefit from a slightly higher idle adjustment.

Under the bonnet, the only noted issue is a slight dampness from the valve cover gasket, which would need tightening or replacement. It sits on a good set of wheels with chrome rings and hubcaps, fitted with older but usable tyres, and is also equipped with a towbar.

There is a minor exhaust leak at the rear silencer, which should be an easy repair. Inspection-exempt forever, making this a very usable and enjoyable classic.

  • Interior condition:

Interior is complete with black vinyl seats. The stitching along the seams of the passenger seat and rear seat has started to come loose (see pictures) and would need re-stitching or replacement. Seat covers are readily available from VP Parts, making this an easy fix.

The headliner has a small rip in the centre section, and the dashboard pad has a crack and previous repairs. All gauges and the radio are working, although the instrument cluster surround has been hand-painted. The carpets are clean and tidy overall.

  • Exterior condition:

The car is presentable and fitted with a nice, newer full-length roof rack. On closer inspection, there are signs of older body filler repairs, mainly around the rear wing near the tailgate and in a few other areas. The car has been repainted to a good standard, though there are some paint flaws and blemishes in places.

The bodywork is straight, although the front doors could benefit from slightly better inward alignment. The underbody shows evidence of older welding work, particularly around the frame, as well as in some areas of the engine bay and front panels.

The chrome work is bright overall, with a small scuff on the left front bumper corner and a small dent in the centre of the rear bumper. An additional front spotlight is fitted but not wired in.

  • General condition:

Everyone can enjoy the Kombi design — it’s super practical and an easy car to own and maintain, with both new and used parts readily available. It makes a very usable summer car, and any cosmetic improvements can be done over time. It’s not a show car, but perfectly fine to enjoy and use as it is.

Facts about the model

The Volvo Amazon estate, also known as the Amazon Kombi, was introduced in 1962 as a more practical complement to the popular Amazon saloon. The model was based on the same robust engineering as the rest of the Amazon range, featuring rear-wheel drive, a solid rear axle, and proven four-cylinder—and later six-cylinder—engines, offering excellent reliability and long service life.

The estate version stood out thanks to its generous load space, the characteristic split tailgate, and a strong focus on usability without sacrificing comfort. As with other Amazon models, safety was a key part of the design, with a strong body structure and well-thought-out solutions that contributed to Volvo’s growing reputation in this area.

The Amazon estate was widely used by families, businesses, and public authorities, both in Sweden and in export markets. Today, it is a highly appreciated classic that combines period-correct design, good driving characteristics, and practical functionality. Thanks to the strong availability of spare parts, it remains relatively easy to own and maintain even by modern standards.
