"A well-maintained and largely renovated 21-window Kleinbus, according to the model code, an authentic so-called "luxury bus." However, it lacks the shiny wide aluminum trims all around, which are characteristic of the luxury bus (available for purchase as new reproductions). An ideal vehicle for excursions and camping trips."

Description

A very fine VW Kleinbus, also known as a "Luxury Bus." It has undergone a rolling renovation over many years, as the owner has had the car for 38 years.
After consultation with a VW expert, we have confirmed that this car, according to the chassis number, is a genuine luxury bus. The car is a 1965 model, imported to Sweden in 1976, and was then registered in the vehicle registry with the model designation "Kleinbus Special." The correct designation should have been "Kleinbus Sondermodell," which is usually translated in Sweden as "luxury bus." (However, "Sondermodell" literally means "special (fine) model"). The model code in the vehicle registry, 244, is for a luxury bus, but for a right-hand drive. The correct code should have been 241, for a left-hand drive car, which the car actually is. (Such detail errors in type designations are unfortunately common when cars are registered during the import inspection as used vehicles and can be corrected if desired. A buyer would need to handle this themselves by requesting a correction through a new registration inspection just for this matter.)

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Very good technical condition. The engine runs fantastically well, and the gearbox shifts smoothly. No rattles from the body, and the brakes work evenly and well. The engine has been replaced with a 1300cc along with the corresponding gearbox, which, according to the owner, provides much better low-end torque and raw power.

  • Interior condition:

The driver's area is in good condition. The seats have been replaced and are not original. The rear section is furnished for overnight stays, including a spirit stove, cooler box, and a stroller.

  • Exterior condition:

Repainted about 2 years ago with excellent results. No dents or scratches. All windows (17 in total) are in good condition. New tires on widened original rims. Lovely sunroof that opens easily and is also watertight.

  • General condition:

A Kleinbus in very good condition. If you want it to be 100% original, only minor changes are needed.

Owner's comment

VW Bus 21 Windows 1965 HZB953 In 1986, the bus was found standing in the backyard of a car repair shop, with a broken engine among other issues. It was a great project, an authentic German-made VW Bus with 21 windows, a sunroof, and a double floor. The bus had already been modified with sleeping spaces, which was perfect for vacations with friends. Later, when the children arrived, we got an awning so Dad had somewhere to sleep. Mom and son slept in the double bed, and daughter slept sideways in the kitchen. We traveled around quite a bit—Gotland, Öland, the west coast, Denmark. The bus served as a service/overnight bus when the kids started motocross. In 1999, it was decommissioned. It came out again in 2022. It has participated twice in the Valdemarsvik Classic Festival, receiving many thumbs up. It was also featured in a magazine article. What has been done during 38 years of ownership: Repainted inside and out Tinted front windows 1300cc engine with dual-port heads New "snake's nest" exhaust system Converted to 12 volts Widened original rims with special hubcaps and beauty rings New tires Slightly lowered rear for better handling New brake shoes, wheel cylinders, brake hoses New bushings in the front suspension New bearings in the rear reduction gears New door seals

Facts about the model

An icon of freedom. The VW Bus was the vehicle of choice for the flower-power generation, especially the luxury version. Featuring a large sunroof and big windows.
